Not another 180 thread :)

Finally made my way up to a 180. It's still a work in progress but I hope to document my journey here. I've lurked in the large reef tanks section for almost 2 years now I can finally contribute.

Standard 180 6x2x2 with dual overflows.

Equipment list so far includes:
40g sump
• I may replace this. I don’t really like the flow path on this one.

Gen-X Mak 4 for my return.
• Can anyone recommend a quieter pump that puts out the same gph?

Wavysea wave makers on both returns
• I don’t like the look of lock lines so I decided to try something a little different, I mounted a check valve inline with the return pipe that site in the overflow. From there I went to a barb & flexhose to the Wavysea units.

1 Tunze 6000.
• I’ll move the other one over when I figure out what kind of flow I want in my existing 90.

Korallin 1502 calcium reactor.
• Currently on my 90, but I’ll be moving it over in a few weeks.

Geo Kalk reactor.
• Should arrive sometime next week. I plan on running my RO/DI top-off through this unit.

Octopus3 Recirculating Protein Skimmer
• I decided to give the new guy on the block a try out. So far it seems to be working pretty well. It cleared the water up nicely. Pulling lots of gunk and it’s pretty much only live rock in the tank right now.

To do list
lighting setup
• 3 250w 12k MH bulbs.
• Icecap ballast. ( I have 2 I’ll be moving from the 90 onto this system)
• Lumenarc III reflectors
• I’d like to run this tank without a canopy & have some sort of automated mechanical light height adjuster.

Aquatronica controller.
• I’ll be ordering this in the next few weeks.

I think that’s everything. 

Decided to go with sand over barebottom mainly for aesthetic reasons. The tank came with starboard cutouts, But I decided against using them in the end. I'm using Caribsea aragonite reef sand. I like this sand because of the larger pieces. I can turn my tunze at full blast and it doesn’t create a sand storm.

Not so good looking picture of the tank while I was filling it. I'll get some better shots in over the weekend,

Forgot to add. I decided to try and do viewable from all sides. so I pretty much kept the rock off all the back glass.

Nice setup so far! I'm also setting up a 180 so, I'll be looking forward with interest to the progression of your setup.

A couple of questions:

I'm looking to upgrade my skimmer as the tank came with a Nautalis TE skimmer. Where did you get your Octopus skimmer? I did some searching and I could find info on the Octopus3.

It looks like the tank is against a wall but you said you wanted all sides viewable. Are you going to move the tank or cut out the wall?

UPDATE!

Haven't posted here in a while. Tank is all setup now so here you go.

I'm starting this thread to document my current setup.

Here's a list of what I have so far.

Tanks

180 gallon Tank
• Standard 180 6x2x2 with dual overflows.
full_tank.jpg

40g sump with built in refugium
• I had to modify the baffles to cut down on air bubbles.

Flow

• 2x Wavysea wave maker. I don’t like the look of lock lines so I decided to try something a little different, I mounted a check valve inline with the return pipe that site in the overflow. From there I went to a barb & flexhose to the Wavysea units.

• 2x Tunze 6000 with multicontroller. Currently mounted between the overflows, I like the flow with these. I may upgrade to 6100's or add some modded maxi-jets.

• Gen-X Mak 4 return pump. I'm pretty happy with this pump now, I originally thought it was too loud.

Topoff, filtration & elements

Korallin 1502 calcium reactor 5lb co2 tank.
• currently gravity feeding. I may use a mini-jet 404 later on, but it's dialed right in now.

Geo Kalk reactor.
• Used for top off with kalkwasser.

Tunze Osomolator controller
• Pumps top off water into the kalk reactor, then out to the tank. (I could probably replace this finctionality with the Aquacontroller, but I like the optical sensor on this device.

Octopus3 Recirculating Protein Skimmer
• I decided to give the new guy on the block a try out. So far it seems to be working pretty well. It cleared the water up nicely. Next year I may go with my original plan for a Deltec.

• Red Sea 100mg Ozone unit with controller. I'll most likely swap this out for a unit without a controller, so I can use the ACIII.

Lighting setup
• 3 Hamilton 250w 14k MH bulbs.
• 6 28w PC actinic bulbs.
• 3 Icecap ballast.
• PFO Horizontal pendant. Each one holds 1 MH and 2 PC bulbs.
• running opentop to keep the heat down.

Aquarium Controller.
• Aquacontroller III pro.
• Currently have 1 DC8, I plan to add 2 additional ones so I can controll the pc bulbs independently.

Livestock.

Fish
• Yellow tang
• Red firefish (2)
• Green chromis (1)
• 6 line wrasse
• Citrion goby
• A few of you know I lost most of my fish a few months ago. I probably won't be adding anymore fish to the tank, unless I find something I really can't resist.

Inverts
• Countless snails & crabs: nassarius, turbos, blue legs, and emralds. :)
• Cleaner shrimp (6)
• I forgot to add my Tridacna crocea clams (5)

Corals
• This section needs some work. I've been collecting and building fro the past few months. Update to come.
• I'm going mainly SPS this time, supplemented by zoa's and shrooms on the lower rocks and ground.

Acro frag that's coloring up nicely from Brown

I'm thinking of framing in one side of the stand and drywalling it to build the tank into the wall. Is this a bad idea with the tank up and running?
