nothing in the cup

so I did the mesh mod and the bubbles in the skimmer are awesome

but Im still not getting any skimate in the cup

even before the mod I wasnt getting anything

I am using a euroreef rs5-3

my tank is 37g w/ 20L sump and 20L fuge

total water about 65+ gal

about 30# LR, no fish

I cleaned the skimmer before I used it and have cleaned the head/neck a few times since....

the skimmer is in a chamber of the sump that is about 8-9" deep

could it be that there just isnt enough crud to be pulled out of the water since I dont have any fish?

my frag tank has no fish and i get a cup a week.

things fall in the water, dust etc. Snails and such crap it up and the corals actually decompose whatever they use as fuel to grow.

the bacteria in the rock does something and creates waste i am sure.

you should get something

how deep of water should your skimmer set in?
your skimmer has never produced skimmate?

I have an RS5-3 as well. I also have the mesh mod too. Depending on how high I keep my water level I get anywhere from an inch of really dark skimmate, to about 1/2 a cup of pretty brown skimmate a day.

If I try for a whole cup a day it gets a bit lighter but not much. You might just need to give it time to work up a good coat of slime in the body.

Bring up the riser tube to bring the bubbles closer to the top. Or maybe you have the riser tube too high and the gunky bubbles have no space to rise. My bubbles are about 1 inch below the cub bottom... I had them lower and got really dark gunk...

is the riser tube the part that is inside the cup?

the bubbles are really thick since the mesh mod

I am not sure what the ideal depth is for the rs5-3

the skimmer has been running approximately 4 months

After the mod it may take a while to slime back up good. I agree with raising the level in the tube, about 2" from the top of the neck is a good spot. You can pull skim on freshly made water, it isn't a lack of bio-load but break in. I know if has been running four months but you pulled it apart with the pump mod....give it a littel more time.

If you want I can give you some of my skimmate. :D

I have the same problem with my ASM5 I think the Air lines are to small..

Before I moved this thing it use to be kick but. But I cannot get it to do anything now. I have to keep raising the riser tube every night or I get nothing.

Just a note on things I have learned...too much air is as bad as not enough. I had to tweak my air inlet to get the best performance...I can easily inject more air into the skimmer but when I do performance is reduced. Before trying to get more air in, look at the skimmer, if you are blowing too many bubbles out of the riser tube and into the sump you have too much air. There is a limit to how much air can be processed...too much air and it doesn't work. Mesh pulls a "friggin" lot of air into the chamber.

jacky jack. me needs some mesh.....

I put a larger venturi on it tonight. wasn't too difficult. i'll see how it works when I get home.

ok, so I rose the riser tube and then I had disaster, the cup filled up with pure water and damn near flooded the area (water escaped the system via the skimmer)

so I lowered it and I noticed that the foam now enters the cup, so it should be good to go now...I didnt realize that you could move the riser tube (if I had known it was called a riser tube I would have figured it out)

I need to carry this sign now
