I have a 75 gal tank that just has rock and a couple snails in it. It has been running since the end of Feb so the cycle should be long finished. Everything was fine, then last night as I was leaving for work, I noticed Black mold, hair gooy junk on a couple of the rocks. It looks kind of like hair alge but black, it is also like a sponge that is dying. Only thing is I never had any sponges in there just rock. Now this is used rock. And the guy who had this before had all kinds of things in his tank, He might of had sponges. I am getting muchrooms, feather dusters, and some zoids starting to grow in there. But this doesn't look good. Last night I also saw some critter, I only got to see it for a second, as it was crawling down the back side of the rock to hide. The part I saw was about the size of a quarter. But it was a lot bigger than that, I only saw it hine quarter, the rest of it was already over the rock. biege in color, very hairy, so I know it wasn't a bristleworm. Best discriptiong an toadstool leather crawling across the rock. I don't know what it is, if it will be reef safe, Iam think maybe a decorator crab.

It might well have been a crab. If it's only a bristleworm that's good. Get a flashlight and check it out after dark. And call the previous owner and ask him what inverts he thought he had in there.

The first thing, could be sponge, algae, or the beard of a clam or other bivalve, they tank a very long time to disintergrate and do no hurt anything.

The second thing was likely a crab.

I wish I could do pics, But I only have a camera phone. Which would give you all a general ideal. But I can not figure out how to down pics on this site. I've tried, I think my software is blocking something. So I gave up.
