Anyone here collect there own sea water, I've been using nutri seawater since i started my tank 2 months ago and everything's been fine not one death, I currently have a black clown pair, yellow watchmen goby and pistol shrimp pair 3 scarlet hermits and a coral banded shrimp, but a £18 for 16 litres of the stuff it's expensive haha so I've decided to go collect my own I've been told of a few decent collecting spots but was wondering if anyone has any tips and warnings?

I have done it 2 times od 2 tank in to places...

I was in Hawaii the other was Santa Barbara Ca the uni there had a collection set up through a sand filter never had problems with it.

only ran tanks less than a year tho...
all depends on where you collect the water from. how its stored etc.

If you're in the right climate and collecting it isn't a pain (and you obviously avoid collecting during major events like a red tide) its the best water you can get.

Yikes! That is expensive. Can you not get commercial salt mixes where you live? If so, I would not bother hauling water around.

My only tip would be to keep a heater and powerhead going. Unlike prepared water, there are many things living that you don't want to spoil your water.

I use ocean water for over a year, no problems and everything is growing well.. It is from mother nature so its the best you can get. I wouldn't worry about anything to spoil the water..

Thing to remember about NSW is you can't exactly store it like synthetic sea water/ mix.

Im not fully educated on the subject, but I know most advise the collected water to be run through a micron filter or it doesn't store too well, so collected water should be used immediately if not properly filtered.

I have let NSW sit in a 5 gallon bucket for weeks with no aeration and it was perfectly fine. I would say that putting it thru a micro filter would be a good idea thou...
