Would it be possible to have a nano tank of the year?

We have finished the Jan - Dec 2011 season and it might be interesting to have a straight vote of the "overall best".

I realize it would be some work for a mod such as Agu to make a poll and to show a FTS for each month's winner and the link to the collective thread builds that is already here but might be interesting.

I realize this could have been put in the feedback forum but I figured it was nano forum specific.

Anyone else?
 
1. Make a voting thread just like each month's contest.
2. List each month's winner with a FTS so we can remember each one.
3. Put a link to each win write up thread under each picture so people who maybe new can go back to the beginning of the year.
4. We vote.
5. The overall winner posts some current shots.
6. Profit.

I am trying to make this easy for everyone involved. I just thought it could be interesting as to what makes one tank more enjoyable over the others.
 
it wouldnt be official, only a mod could do that. but you or me or anyone could make a post with all the fts and everything you explained. I second this idea!

Couple of thoughts. How many past winners would want to participate ? Would the old pics be used or would each entrant need new and current pics? If we went new pics but a tank wasn't still up would that disqualify that aquarist ? Would the winner have another tank thread and start the next months contest,or would it be a ceremonial victory ? Would we invite members from other forums to vote?

OK more than a couple thoughts.

The contest isn't "official", it was going for a couple of years before some of the mods even knew it existed, I suspect even now some mods aren't aware of the nTOTM contest. The only reason to make it official would be if prizes from contest sponsers were involved.

Thanks for posting. Not sure why I started thinking about this the other night but I am going to blame the 4 ice cream drumsticks I ate right before bed.

I was thinking this would continue along the monthly contest lines rather than something new that could get bogged down and lost.

1. Unofficial with no prizes, no metals just eternal internet glory.
2. Each winner would be PM asking if he or she would like to participate. If the answer is no and this goes forward then that person’s tank is removed. If the answer is sure then that person is in and nothing has to be done on their part. If there is no reply would the person be considered in?
3. Each winner’s tank would be from the month that it won. Because tanks change and not always for the better, we would be judging that snapshot of time vs. how the tank looks this month. A tank that won in January may not even qualify for a December contest. Tank crashes etc. are a sad aspect of this hobby.
4. As far as “what would the winner do” maybe do a thread with current shots etc.

The other thing I am interested in and this would come from the voters is why the voter picked that tank as the one. I know I have certain criteria when I look at the tanks each month and if a tank does not meet those then I don’t vote. I am sure everyone has a list as well and it probably differs among everyone reading this.

So since this is an extension of an unofficial contest and if it was to get started would a mod have to do it or just one of the hobbyists?


I am sure others have some ideas to make this better and would be interested in reading those as well.
 
I think this is a great idea.

I would like to see the monthly tank winners be given the option of using a current picture of their tank, or the pictures used when they won nTOTM. That way if they suffered a tank crash, they still have great pictures to use. If the tank has continued to improve, then they can show off their hard work.
 
I don't know.... I think it would be like too much of a competition, or too big a glory. IDK.
If we get it to happen, shouldn't there be an age limit requirement? For the tank, I mean. I don't check the Nano ToTMs, but I have seen a lot of tanks just filled to the brim with frags, and people thinking of the tank as incredible... Am I alone over here?

Thank you for putting a comment in. There have been 200+ views and only a handful of people have responded so it is hard to gauge if this is something beneficial or not.

As far as a competition etc. the 12 tanks have already been picked over the year and it would be more of an unofficial contest. Because of this no grandstanding hey vote for me would happen though if a person wanted to submit a current FTS I don't think there is anything wrong with that as pointed out earlier.

Also as I mentioned in the beginning if someone did not want to be in it then they did not have to and would not be considered as part of this competition.

You did hit on something and that relates back to my comment about asking the voters to explain why they picked a specific tank.

For example I would suspect you would look for a more mature tank with coral growth vs. a tank that has 100 frags in 10 gallons of water.

Again if that is what appeals to a hobbyist great talk about.

I guess this thread started as a way for people to discuss the husbandry and ideas behind the smaller systems instead of worrying about the latest piece of equipment or the latest limited rare super mind blowing superstar.
 
Ok I guess at this point it is time to take a quote from Zombieland and um not shut up.

Since Agu is aware of this and has no problem and I made the suggestion I guess I will get things started on this.

On Monday I will send each winner a PM and an email informing them of the "contest".

I will give them some time to respond probably until after Christmas and then I will make the voting thread.

I figure voting needs to be open for longer than a monthly contest due to the holidays and sometimes people are gone for this time.

Again this is suppose to be an informal contest and I hope it is educational as well.

If anyone has any other suggestions I would like to hear from you too.

this is an awesome idea!! I agree with KafudaFish in regards to them choosing which picture to use TOTM or a current tank shot. It would be sweet if the person got a little logo for under their name for TOTY you know for reef central glory!
 
My thoughts,

Use the fts from each monthly winners submission and their user name. Pm'ing each winner and the debate it could start (new picture vs. original nTOTM photo) seems unnecessary to me. Like was said, snapshot in time. We all vote and the winner is invited to discuss their tank, the good, the bad or the ugly. Post new pics if they wanted or simply say 'thanks for the honor but that tank was taken down'.
 
I agree, I think it should be original pics. Otherwise January's winner has a heck of advantage over December's and so forth.

Let's do it!
