Good quality live rock and sand. Let the little associated creatures breed for a few months to large populations (feed them) that can use-up large food inputs. Add fish and corals only after ~6 months. Skim if/when necessary. Use activated carbon. Use water changes if/when necessary. A refugium growing Chaetomorpha can also be very effective. The idea is to have an effective system (an ecosystem) in place to convert fish waste into things that you want/are easy to deal with like coral growth, crustacean growth, coralline algae growth, Chaetemorpha growth, etc. and limit it going into things you don't want (mineralization by heterotrophic bacteria). Good husbandry--that's the only secret.
