I just bought a nuvo 8 gallon and i have a few questions. First off I already have a 10 gallon running but the seal on it is corroding so I bought a new tank before it got worse. My questions are how should i transfer everything? and the other is what lights should i use? my old ones broke and the lights that come with the tank is 8 watts 14k daylight spectrum. Do you think this will be good enough for lips corals and other hard corals?

On a small tank I would go with LEDS as they will not overheat your tank or cause massive evaporation. The best thing to do would be to go online and make a custom light( some sights will let you pick out the fixture and mix and match LEDS). the pros and cons of LEDS are

PROS
. Not a high electrical cost
. Some corals will give a fluorescent glow when shined over by blue LEDS
. Has a shimmering effect
. You can program yourself with different colors and elaborate sun sets and rises
. Won't overheat or evaporate
. Never has to be replaced

CONS
. Higher initial start up cost( don't have to worry about this as you won't need many)
. Corals grow a little slower

LEDS can grow SPS and LPS but if you don't have the right spectrum of LEDS your coral will turn brown.

nbyron74 I would upgrade the lights if you want to keep more stony corals. I am not sure if the Marineland in your signature is what broke or what you will be using.

As for the transfer, do you want the tank in the same place as the old one?

If so, simply drain water into a 5 gallon bucket or two. Take Livestock and put it in the buckets. Move old tank, add LR and some of the water into the new tank, then top off with new saltwater and toss the old so you do a water change in the process.

For your sand I would not transfer it. I would simply take a little of it to seed the new tank and use new sand for the rest of it. I would rinse the new sand first so you don't have a particulate storm when you add the water to it.

If the new tank is in a different spot do the same, simply fill with some new saltwater first and carry the stuff over.
