Yellow pages are letting me down, ive only found two that actually sell marine fish. Does anyone know any stores or even better distributors that sell to the public?

Not Honolulu but...I think this is the place I went to when lived in Hawaii more than 10 years ago.

Coral Fish Hawaii
98-810 Moanalua Road
Aiea, HI

modern pets near walmart off of Keeaumoku street. they have fish from all over, and hawaiian fish prices are very very cheap.

and coral fish Hawaii in Aiea. He is a wholesaler as well so fish come and go quickly. go on Friday for Marshalls, or Tuesday for christmas fish.

I've been to Modern Pets. It's a very small store but the workers are very friendly. What are you planning on getting? Can you purchase something from the store and ship it?

I dunno, I was going to see if i can get a permit or something to fly as a carry-on.

modern had an amazing Juvi Bellus Angel, but it was being held for someone.

I will likely get a hi flame angel, potters angel, possibly flame pair, a couple small gobies, and possibly another wrasse or two.

Good luck finding a Hawaiian flame angel. They're not common in Hawaii, and since they're not worth a whole lot we don't try very hard to catch them. Modern Pet is probably your best bet.

Christmas Island flame angels are very plentiful here, though, and most people can't tell the difference from the Hawaiian ones.

Modern Pet and Coral Fish are both very good. Not much else on the island when it comes to saltwater fish, but between those two shops you should be able to find something good.

Yea coral had about 50 xmas yesterday. Modern seems to have a load of juvi fish, which i like.

How many people collect on the island? is it like a small community or 100 people grabbing 20 fish a day?

Modern Pets is nice. I was there with Robert and they had a ton of hawaiian species at cheap prices (compared to what we on the mainland spend). Lots of dwarf golden eels, crazy colored frogfish, potters angels, etc.

Good selection and great people

You dont need a permit. I carried 2 boxes worth of fish and all survived. Each box will count as a luggage though and the size can't exceed the normal baggage sizes the airlines impose. Fish must be double bagged and placed in a styrphone box which is placed inside a cardboard box. Fish was scanned through the X-ray with no problems. Don't bother taping the box too well because TSA will open it. Its impossible to bring it as a carry on since it exceeds the liquid limit imposed by TSA. Only as a checked luggage.

cthetoy, I was always under the impression that you couldn't take any livestock out of Hawaii. Did you catch these fish yourself, or buy them at a LFS?

I bought them direct from a collector. You can buy it from the LFS as well. Ask them if they can give you a shipping box with styrophone for your fish

As long as the fish in not endangered then you are free to take it home with you. Hawaii is part of the US so no Customs are involved. Only thing you cant bring back are corals which are illegal.

You can collect your own as well with a permit thats easy to get and cheap. Go to the Hawaii agriculture site for the permit info. Most shores are protected though so you have to find a shore or area that you can collect.

An important note is fish that are caught in Hawaii are drug free.

Anyone know a collector that might be in the flame wrasse pair business? :c). I have three more weeks here, but with working there is no garuntee i can get a shop to hold me a pair.

ask moderns for a pair of flame wrasse. May be able to get one for you on a monday. Also, Wet Pets Hawaii is a retailer online and could probably meet up with you somewhere. Moderns get some flame angels from Kona Hawaii (big island) which generally means they are legit hawaiian flames, although some don't look that nice.

it helps a lot if you know what you want a head of time... lol :)

call the airline you are flying with and tell them what you to do. Most likely you wont have any complications. There are boxes at modern pets that you could take or he may charge 5$, but they already have the styro and cardboard (he will even pack them for you) Make sure it is a CARRY ON. The luggage goes where it is bitter cold on a plane and the fish wont survive. (luggage is different from Cargo)

You can NOT bring liquids as carry on if its 3oz or more. TSA will not allow since 3 years ago when terrorists tried to sneak bomb making liquids.

TSA site: "3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3 ounce bottle or less (by volume) ; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3 oz. container size is a security measure."

My 2 boxes went in as checked luggage. The airline put "Live Animals" stickers all over the box. Perhaps they have a special compartment for sensitive luggage. Airline did not charge me extra for this.

Hawai'i doesn't really impose a law as to what you bring out but what you bring in per se. Now that is a general statement however. They will nab you if you are bringing out a protected specie, or one that is not in "season". They are in a battle with conserving their water resources so that dept. is fairly strict. So, no they do not care what you bring out, as long as it is not protected.

As well, you can catch them and the permit is free... BUT your net regulation is really small... You would have to pay for the "bigger nets"
