Occelaris Clown and New Sebae Anemone

It isn't uncommon for H. crispa to look like that when it is malnourished and/or ailing. Unfortunately, it is difficult to differentiate the two while it is in that condition.

This pic looks exactly like malu to me, but if it has a fat leathery column, it is the strangest H. crispa I've seen.

So you think the new anemone looks unhealthy? What should he look like? I'm already on the hunt for Cyclop-eeze(sp?).

I think you quoted the wrong person. I didn't say the anemone looked unhealthy. Amphiprion said that it looked malnourished and/or ailing.

It looks a little bleached to me, but I wouldn't sweat it. Pretty much all host anemones look a little peaked when you first get them. Feed it small pieces of fish or shrimp every few days and hopefully it will be fine.

I wouldn't bother trying to feed it cyclop-eeze.

I am leaning towards a hungry/starving Crispa, have a feeling that when/if it recovers the tentacles will be longer.

But, with this being in a 6 gallon nano-cube I see this being a big up hill battle.

What lights are you using?

when I got my H. crispa it looked alot like yours, but after a month or so being under my 150w MH and small peices of silversides and shrimp the tentacles are longer and more "flowy" for lack of the correct term.

I'm using the stock lights - 10K daylight/7100K blue actinic.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant to quote Amp. :)

I'm becoming concerned that the inhabitants of my tank might be unhealthy/malnourished. My LFS recommended the brine shrimp diet for my fish. I now feel a little less confident in their "knowledge". I think I even recall reading an article or a blurb somewhere that mentioned brine as a treat and not for a complete diet.

Day # 4:

Early morning of day 4. Let there be bonding! Homey now spends most of his time in the nem. :) He appears to be nudging it into a shape that he prefers.

I love how he snuggles around inside of it and then completely relaxes. It's so funny sometimes.

the vast majority of H. crispa come in bleached like this, takes a little TLC but as long as they dont' start to deteriorate a lot of them come back. should be a nice cream or tan color although i've seen ones that almost look black (a very deep brown) as well.

My aquarium inhabitants appear to be doing well. Today was the first day that I began their new diet. I bought some silversides for the the anemone. I also picked up some vitachem and some Prime Reef Flakes by Ocean Nutrition.

I soaked the food for about 5 minutes and then served. The fish didn't seem to care for the flakes, though. The anemone; however seemed to like the silverside I fed him.

Day # 10:

Here are several new pics. Probably can't tell from the photos, but the anemone appears to be darkening up slightly around the base of his tentacles. I also haven't had the fish on the new diet for very long, but the clown looks a little healthier. I may not be giving it an objective eye, though. What do you guys think?

These pics were taken while the nem was still digesting his meal, so he is a little closed up.

very nice, its tentacles are starting to look much better..they shouldn't be short and stubby. If they are it means they are starving. It looks like your anemone is recovering nicely. Keep up the good work..keep feeding it you aren't in the safe zone yet but the anemone does look better.

I got a txt message while at work informing me that the anemone had flattened out. He had retracted his tentacles. A short while later he returned to what is his current "normal" state. I'm not sure why this happened.

I direct feed him every other day with a piece of silverside after it has soaked in tank water and vitachem for about 5 minutes. Do you think I should increase this to everyday?

no, every other day is fine....him flattening out and deflating is probably him expelling waste or doing an internal water change. My sebae does this every so often. As long as he returns to "normal" he should be fine.
