oceanic salt "bad press"

That is an unfair test. If you want to test the water, you mix up a new sample in a clean bucket, and test it after it has mixed and been aerated for 24 hours.

Putting a light over a barrel of water will attract all kinds of stuff, and algae will grow.

Your comments above would cause anyone to panic, imho.

I'm about to order my fourth 200 gal bucket of Oceanic. I do 40 gallon water changes about every 4 weeks. As of about October when my windows and doors are closed I have been dripping about 1 TBS Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime/1gal RO water to cover my evaporation (abt 4 gal/day) I do this to combat higher CO2 levels causing lowered ph levels. My parameters are as follows with Oceanic, just measured this am

SG- 1.025
Ph- 8.0-8.2
Ca - 520
St- 4
Mg- 1400
Alk- 12.5

On a side note: I must be doing something right, my aptasia is flourishing!

Well I emailed oceanic at customerservice@oceanicsystems.com and they have had 0 people call or email and complain. I did my water change yesterday and I have a thick brown silt all over my glass. (diatoms I assume). My hair algae grows however it isn't that bad but annoying. I asked if they could test a batch or replace it with a fresh batch. Their reply was this after I explained it all very clearly. Please email them so they can actually do something.

Thank you for the e-mail. This is the first e-mail I have received regarding Oceanic salt and algae. Algae blooms are usually caused by light and/or high amounts of phosphates in the water. Oceanic salt does not have phosphates. If your tank is sitting in front or near a window where there is direct sunlight, this can also cause algae bloom. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

Thanks,
Ayinde Thomas

I would like to ship a sample of my bucket. As well as shipping it to randy. I know I am not crazy. I setup another 10 gallon new with no gravel only a aqua clear 20 filter and a very small peace of LR from my main display tank. Now it is only been 5 days and running NO 10K lights. Tank has brown stuff all over it. I have RO/DI.

Alright naysayers:)Time for counterbalance:D

I started my reeftank with IO,but was one of the ones jumping on the Oceanic bandwagon and got my first lil bag like Mark. After a month of cycling this stuff in alls I could do was be amazed at the jumpstart, coraline was just caking my tank, and the consistant patches of algae soon was replaced with lots of pink and purple.

Then the price hike for Oceanic and drop in price for IO made me switch for about 5-6 months.Noticed immediate drop in my coraline,im talking from a solid pink wall to a skattered patch! All the sudden I started getting crazy macro(like 6 diff. specie in a 6" square!) and micro blumes,.With a consitant periodical blume of cyano, diatoms, and hair. The nuicent algaes seemed seasonally consistant but not overwhelming, but nuicense just the same. All while keeping up my same regiment/husbandry but using IO.

So what I do?Go crying back to Oceanic! Tested it after mixing 3 days in a closed tub and tested a ph of 8.2-8.3ish @ 1.025 salinity. Its now been a couple months, and I could not say enough wonderfull things about this salt, as about 75% of my tanks critters calcify in some form including my macro. Luck of the draw I guess?Just my 2 pennies:)

My experience with Oceanic salt.

Started my 54gal reef tank in Sept 05. For about the first month got the typical blooms during cycling then everything was clean and clear. Added a few fish still no problems for about a month then all of a sudden every type of algae known showed up.It was driving me crazy. Tried everything thought maybe my tank was still cycling but all parameters were perfect regarding testing (Nitrates, phos., etc...).

Then out of the blue everything cleared up. Lots of nice pink and purple comming out everywhere. IMO the salt has been great for me except for the Alk levels are on the low end.

Tested a fresh batch of water last night and dKH was a low 6. Not good. No problems other than that. Have a crocea clam, small zoo frag and BTA w/ paired clowns and a bluetang all are thriving and growing like crazy.

i like kent. a basic salt with alright levils of everything. dont use io in reef. from what i hear it contains edta which slowly keeps corals from growing

a little over a year now and i have used nothing but this salt.no problems to complain about and my levels have never really changed. i like the salt but every one has their favorite so who knows.

at the LFS we use Oceanpure by com. axis....does anybody have exp. with this salt? it seems to be a great salt and the price is right.
