Oceanic salt

My last batch of oceanic salt measured at 17dkh at 35ppt(1.0264). I was wondering if anybody else was getting high alkalinity with Oceanic salt.

Its slightly above avg in alk and very high in calcium. Most people mix it with IO (Instant Ocean) which is very low in calcium.

Alot of people use 50/50. I am using 80/20 IO/O.

My alk runs 9.5 to 10. My calcium is 440.

bet your calcium is high also. hey are you adding the correct ratio of salt to water. I had, not the same exact readings as you, but they were up there. i was using a hydrometer when i switch to a refractometer from ebay 20.00 everything fell in check from there.

I use a refractometer. I do weekly water changes, so I don't change large amounts of water. The levels of calcium and alkalinity are within normal parameters. I guess I got a really high batch. I may switch to Tropic Marin.

Wow, Perc........ first I've heard of that.

Try to mix the bucket up real good next time to eliminate settling and check the numbers again.

Just a thought. :)

at 1.024 i normally see about 16-17 dKH with IO,

Then you have testing issues.

IO @ 1.024 has run a consistent 11-12 dkh for years.

analytical chemist. ISO 9000 certified lab.

Meaning what

Lots of labs have problems analyzing salt water formulas. Just ask AWT.

Instant Ocean salt has been one of the most consistent salt mixes over the last 10 years and if you are getting 16 - 17 dkh alkalinity @ 1.024, you have a problem with your testing procedures. Period. :)

Oceanic if famous for low alk - unless they have reformulated the product I suspect you have a bad batch or a bad reading.

meaning that the results are accurate and several buckets of the salt are being replaced.

thank you, but I don't need a referral to AWT.

Hmm, that is indeed strange. The last batch of Oceanic I bought rang in at about 8.5 dkh.

I hope you are not seeing a trend :(

I just changed 4 gallons in my 55 fowler tank. The dkh read at 10dkh. I would be afraid to use it if I had to do a emergency water change and had to change out a lot of water. I will finish it up, and switch to Tropic Marin I think.

Just tested my 20gal batch I made yesterday.
dkh 8
Ca 500 I just bought the bucket in May from DF&S. This is pretty much the same numbers that I always get. When did you buy yours??

I actually prefer alk a little higher but thats just me.

Are you thinking TM or TM Pro ?

What is the difference between the TM and the Pro. I measured the Alk just after I posted and it went up to 11 dkh, which is fine.

TM Pro has more calcium and magnesium, but less alkalinity

The numbers I got are posted in my Salt mix thread at the top of this forum. :)
