OceanPure vs. Oceanic

Dragging this thread up again. I decided to give this stuff another go, since I ran out of the salt I was using. I just mixed up 7 gallons from a 50 gallon bag. Here's what I got. All tests are salifert except pH which is a pinpoint meter.

@ 35 ppm

pH 7.85 (ugh)
Calcium 530 (measured twice)
Alk 8.1 dkh
Mag 1320

So the mag looks good, alk is acceptable, but the calcium is off the charts, in that Oceanic level, and the 7.85 pH is ridiculous.

Man The alk and Mag is abvout what I get... My ph has been 7.9-8.1ish I believe...

Still using it myself No complaints at all..

James

rrmiv,

Give it 8 hrs or more, your PH should be 8.1 to 8.3
It takes average 8 to 12 hrs for buffer to fully activated.
I have never able to get may cal to 530. Wouldn't it be participate??
I have use it for bout two years and many reefer around here use this salt and have great result.

Tat Tropical Illusion in Thousand Oaks Ca. has about 4500 gallons of salt water tanks and over 2500 gallons are the best reef stuffs there. They use only Oceanpure salt for their systems. May be you may want to go there and take a look. The animals looks really good. I would say, there must be over a 100gs worth of corals living there.

I'm sure that place has a great corals, just as there are some places up in Northern California with great corals as well, using Oceanic salt, Instant Ocean, Bio Sea Marinemix, and even one that uses Oceanpure. I'm not commenting on the quality of the salt, I'm commenting on the numbers that I am getting out of it.

One thing is salt does have is batch numbers on the bottom. I'd be interested to see if anyone with the same batch number that I am using sees the same numbers. This is batch SF4-15Y.

I will try to get you some answer from Via Aqua Commodity Axis.
I will try to get a hold of this batch of salt and run a test on it. Let see what I get.

Trmiv -

Just ordered 800 gallons of the Oceanpure and my numbers after 48 hrs mixing in a 55 gallon drum -

PH - 8.1
dkH - 8
Cal - 420
Mag - 1350

Is your Calcium test expired?

Cheers

I just find out, the SF4-15Y is made in Oct. 2004.
When and where did you buy this bag of salt?
I have ask them to see if they still have any put a side, if they do they will run a test on it. I will post the result.

I did not know store could have salt sit around for this long of time.

Oceanpur salt current batch is SF4-34Y.

If you are unhappy with the bag of salt you have, e-mail them they will ship you an other bag to try.

Crap, I knew I shouldn't have trusted this place. I bought the salt this past saturday at a place called Greater Bay Aquarium in Hayward, CA. Hole in the wall, not the nicest place, but the only place close to me that sells the salt. There is a place in downtown Oakland that sells it, but that's a bit of a trek for me.

That Sucks trmiv!

I'll check my Batch #, but I'm sure it is the same as Illusions

I just made some up a week ago to 35ppm

pH 8.1
Ca 425
Alk 8.2 (which is where I run it so I'm ok with that)
Mg 1250

I sent them an email and they responded. They want me to send back the bag of salt, and they will refund me. Also, they want to buy the pinpoint pH meter I'm using and the calcium kit I'm using from me so they can test it.

While I appreciate their willingness to pursue this problem, I'm going to have to decline because that would be a pain to ship all that stuff to them, and replace the meter and the kit.

I saw your email and took the liberty of calling Lucky Goldfish (510)836-3039. They are willing to take the salt, pinpoint pH meter and the calcium kit from you to save you the trouble in shipping it back. Please contact them if this is convenient for you. They said they could even give you a box of OceanPure Salt for you to experiment with. Hope this helps

Yu L LI, wow thank you for all your work on this, that is quite an offer. I would take them up on that, but I'm not working in Downtown Oakland anymore so it's tough for me to get to Lucky Goldfish. I might be able to get there on Sunday though. They would reimburse me on the cost of the salt, meter, and kit?

I have to say, Commodity Axis's diligence in this matter is impressive, and does make me feel good about using their product. I have a feeling other manufacturers wouldn't go this far.

I too have been in contact with them for months regarding this salt. I find that they aim to please.

The reason that I've been in contact with them is that I was asking them about trace element amounts in their salts. They are not working on locating a suitable lab to run these tests. While it's great that they are offering this, I havn't heard back from them in a while in this regard.

I'll follow up with them and let you all know.

You know before I started using Oceanpure I was Fed up with using Oceanic... I set out to find the best salt out there that I was going to Use...

I sent Emails and Faxes to all the salt companies out there... I got replies back from all stating yes we will send you a free sample to Our product is too good to send you a sample..Rio/Taam/Commodity Axis was one of the ones that was like "your interested in switching to our salt.. here is the levels we currently strive for your sample is on its way" I got my sample... Whoops wrong bag was sent.. Was supposed to go to the lab or something... Sent me out another sample and I tested and the Numbers were Extremely close to what they said they would be... One of my friends was also testing out the salt at the same time and had great results... Me to be honest after the Entire Crystal Seas (mind you they pretty much said go to hell when i asked for a sample) Incident was leary about putting any new salt into my tank... So I sat back and waiting for him to dump it into his tank.. A week went by and I was like how are things... I believe his answer was things look great... So in went a pretty large water change... I think 50g to be exact... So far everytime I open a new bag and its a different batch I test it... numbers are so close to each other It could be a simple testing issue difference or slightly different mix were talking dkh 8.1 one batch and 8.4 the next batch... Not actual numbers but as an Example...

I have since been using their salt... I would highly Recommend the salt to anyone... I know locally I have gotten several Friends to use it and they like it as well... As long as They keep the levels consistent like they have been and dont change the formula much they will have me a salt customer for life... My corals look better than ever as did the tank since I started using it...

Commidity Axis, Taam/Rio/Via Aqua Whatever you want to be called... Thanks for such a great salt... Keep up the nice formulas..

James

trmiv,

When you go to Lucky Gold Fish, please ask for the owner Hunter, he already aware of your situation. They will take care of you.
Make sure you take the PH meter and the Cal test kit there too. They will buy them from you.

Thanks! I'll try to make it over there this Sunday.

Given how much everyone likes this salt, and the lengths that they are going to get to the bottom of the results I'm having with my batch, I will definitely keep using this product. I wish other manufacturers would go this far. Now, if only the stores that are very close to me would start carrying this stuff!
