Ocellaris & BTA tank does mixing color matter (of clown same species)

Hey all,

I'm going to be setting up a clown/bta tank with about 12 clowns and 6-8 btas. I have been in the hobby for a good while and know the advice that this type of setup may not last for a long period of time but I will monitor it closely and make sure no clowns get killed.

The clowns will be ocellaris and they will be introduced from the same batch and put in all at once. The tank is very established and the bta's are being introduced first and then the clowns added after.

My random question is would it be wiser to get all orange clowns or can I get 6 orange & 6 black?

This is most likely a "who knows" until we see what happens but I thought I'd ask. I wasn't sure if the color variation would be an easy way for them to segregate & get aggressive toward each other as they get older.

Thanks for any input,
Joe

I have mixed clownfish of the same species together, they were from the same parents just different clutches. These clowns have a wide variety of color and barring due to the parents being different morphs of the same type of clownfish. These clownfish were about 6week/4week old.
In the BRS harem tank they had to remove a clownfish that was being singled out for aggression, it was the only one still showing an orange face. So is that the color that made the fish stand out or was it just the fact it was the least developed fish in the tank, smaller size and submissive behavior?

Thanks for the info, when you say you have mixed clowns, did you mean in a large # in the same tank with multiple anemones, or just in general? If in a large #, how did they do? The ones I get will be very young as best I can get.

I also saw that on the BRS videos and somewhat prompted me to wonder if I should get a black and white mix of Occelaris vs just all orange or all black. It's a bit aesthetic as I love how a black clown looks in a rose bta and a also an orange in a green bta, the contrasts are very cool.

I did this with very young clowns in a grow out tank. Just an example of behavior, not a long term example.

I added 3 clowns to 122 clowns, they are still together in growout. I can only pick out 1 of the three due to its funny barring. All getting along well enough, seems they were accepted into the group.
