october meeting

So I have heard a buzz about the october meeting and figured I'd offer to host it... I could only do it the 28th or 29th, whichever day worked best for the most people, that's the weekend my hubby works.
"but it's only august!" yea yea, I know. Just putting it out there for people to ponder. Oh, I'm about 25 minutes north of Green Bay, real easy to find. So, go, ponder...

ahhh, 17 views... people are pondering! And it's no big deal, if someone else would rather take the october meet I'll try to make it... just thought I'd offer.

I know Jeff was talking about hosting back in July but then Mike was going to. So I think he'd be the only one you'd have to duke it out with! :)

That is the weekend before one of the kids Birthdays but put me down as a I'll be there if there is no party on the day of the meeting. I will let you know as it draws closer.

Count me in. Might be fun to watch the duking out part though. Debsisterflo and Nellie in a tub of......Nevermind.

:) So it looks like I have some interest, goody. Just for fair warning, my tank is small and simple, so there won't be much of an oooh and ahhh factor, but I'm still proud of what I've accomplished so far. I just began this tank in january.
My main feature of this meet will be the building of my sump. I have a 20g tank, I have a coralife skimmer, heater, and plexiglass that's ready to be cut into baffles. I need to know where to put those baffles, I need help getting it all rigged up, choosing an overflow (unless someone had a used one to donate or sell at a good price). I'm also going to have to have a return pump, but what kind I have absolutely no clue! Gotta get the water back and forth somehow too... so that will be the day's fun! My main and biggest concern is any chance of a flood, that really does scare me and I want to avoid that at all costs.
Soda, beer, and munchies are a given... if anyone has a chip/munchie preference please lmk and I'll try to accomidate. I never buy chips and that stuff so lemme know what you want!

oh, fyi, I have a dog... who absolutely loves it when someone throws a tennis ball or frisbee. If anyone has allergies or fears just lmk and I will tie him out.

Jess,
If we drill your tank (Jason has the drill bits), you don't have to worry about floods or buying an overflow. I really recommend it. With a bunch of people at the meeting it could be accomplished relatively easily and quickly (I know I know Jason - 20 minutes) to minimize fuss and shock to your tank inhabitants. You can do this really! No really!

Wow I am even off that weekend. Jess I have two overflows if that's the way you want to go but like Jon says overflows don't work all the time unless you are real good at keeping an eye on them I would drill. I never had the flood problem but on my first tank the overflow would stop and it would drain the sump down until the return pump was blowing all kinds of bubbles. Don't get me wrong they do work and allot of people use them its just something I will never use again just my opinion.

oh but, unghhh... I don't want to drain that tank to move it, you can't get at the back well and I just don't want to turn this into more of a hassle than it has to be... and what if something happens to the tank, if the drilling cracked it or something? Then I'd be done, no more tank... I'm not a risk taker! I'd be glad to try an overflow to begin with. Um, BryanJ showed me his overflow in the basement, and he showed me how if the siphon is broke that it just stops? He seemed to think that would work well for me.

Yep that's what mine did the syphon stops it pumps all the water it can back into the tank. I had mine set up so the tank could handle the water that was in the sump without running over so that's something you want to make sure of. And then theres the bubbles that the return pump makes when it pumps dry with you going un north on your off weekends you need to check out how to fix that. I can't ever remember how many call I got in the middle of the night at work saying your tank is blowing bubbles again. If I was you I would run down to Petco and get one of there one dollar a gallon tanks and drill that and then someday switch tanks just my two cents.

:D ah Mike, if I'm getting a bigger tank I'm not stopping at a dinky 55 gallon!   My dream is a long RR 125g... one that is like, 5 or 6 feet long. That's mah dream...

Jessica,
Listen to sensei Mako (that just sounds right doesn't it). Let us drill your tank grasshopper. Your karma is to have a properly drilled tank. Listen to your inner soul or the force or whatever. You know we speak the truth. Chant with me now. Drill the tank. Drill the tank. Drill the tank.

yeah Jason, you're really scary!
I'm hunting for a 45g, then it'll fit on my tank, my light will still fit, and if I'm tearing down at least I'll be going bigger.
well, that's two months away and that's a long time! So everyone, start hunting for my new tank!

Did you check Petco in GB (west)? I think their $1 per gallon sale is still on today. They had a couple of nice small bowfront aquariums left on Wednesdday.

nope, don't want a bowfront. I want to get a 45g, standard, so it fits on my stand and the lights fit on it. I'm not draining this tank until I get a new tank, a bigger tank, to replace it.
