Octopus Skimmer and noise

I have just put in my new NW-150, and there is a lot of noise from the pump. If I put my finger over the fitting on the end of the pump, it quiets down, but then stops skimming. If I put my finger over the air input on the silencer, it quiets down but then quickly fills the cup.

How deep should the water level be in the sump?

What's up?

I know there is a huge Octopus skimmer thread, but it goes on forever, and is essentially useless for quick reference. I'm amazed that there are no directions about the use of the skimmer included with it.

TIA

I don't think you can do anything about the noise. I've got an Octopus Shredder and it's kind of noisy. As far as not having directions, I know exactly what you mean, I had to look online to figure it out. The little tower where the water comes out is adjustable, you raise and lower it until you get the level you need for the foam to make it to the collection cup. I didn't realize that until I found a NW instruction manual online somewhere.

Is the noise your talking about from the air venturi? I put a wider tip on the end of mine and that helped silence it...otherwise maybe a longer piece of airline would work.

I guess it must be from the venturi. When I restrict the flow through it, it get quieter. How did you put a bigger tip on it? Can you buy them?

On the positive side, it seems to be quieting down a bit now. I increased the water level in the sum, and that has helped.

yeah if you can get larger tubing to fit around it that would help. I just put a tip on it from another pump....I think it came with a maxi jet or something.
