Octopus Skimmer Mods

Got mine to be quiet. Thanks for the tip. Seems to be working better than the NW. Google "opt-2000 pinwheel" and look for a RC sponsor selling them.

I just got a Reef Octopus DNW 200. No mods on this yet.
I was thinking of Feeding the overflow directly into the skimmer, and the water from the skimmer into the refugium & the return. (Instead of using another feed pump).

Does this sound right? Is the water out put from the skimmer at the same rate as the input? Am I giving any room to flooding here?

Well I have mine being fed from the overflow, but it is split so some of the water runs to the skimmer. Ther rest to the sump\fuge. Just upgraded from the 150 to the 200. To answer your question I would say yes the water you fed will come out at the same rate.

need help with pump selction I have a nw 150 bought it last year I want to change the pump out and get a better on it currently has a 2000l/h I was thing of switching the the sedra 5000 but the fittings dont match any suggetions or a different pump.

Anyone have some extra Enkamat? I can't see paying $6 for a 6"x6" piece from the dude on ebay.

FWIW: I have the original NW150 - I've modded the venturi and put a ro/di tube directly in the center. I'm going to ream the volute and the bends this weekend. I tried the GG mod, but went back to stock. Pulling about 28W at .38PF.

I have pretty much the same question, I have an NW200 with the OTP3000. I want to change the pump and im willing to drill the stock union off and put a uniseal to fit another pump if I have to.

I wonder though if the sicce pump will fit on the stock union though? does anyone know what size that union is?
i know mcmaster carr sells metric fittings but i need the size.

also, if i do cut and use a uniseal, does anyone know if a sedra 5000 would fit with the elbow at the location of the hole?

has anyone tried the new pinwheel for the otp3000?

Any and all help is appreciated!!

Can anyone tell me what tubing the input takes on a DNW 110?

Already ordered mine. I pick it up in 1.5 weeks. :)

My Gate Valve Mod is loud!!! Pics are below. Any tips on how to quiet down the output? My wife is gonna kill me.

The discharged water leaving the gate valve is splashing loudly into the sump and is LOUD! I have tried different plumbing, and it seems that if I plumb the output under water, that it effects the performance.

any suggestions? thanks!!!

LOL... it's funny looking back and seeing how clean my sump used to be :D

halemoana, try using a pipe cut at 45 degrees with the angle half submerged, it may allow the water to slide out of the pipe and prevent the turbulence that causes the noise

^thanks for the suggestion. Ya know, I've actually tried that, but because the output is already so low, an extra 45 still gets submerged. I even tried drilling a couple anti-siphon holes in the 45 and then I even used a dremel to carve out the entire inside of the elbow to make a little water slide hoping that the water would "slide" down (with an open top) and then gently slide into the water, but still loud.

frustrating....

Just bought a NWB-150 any recirculating mods for this or and other pumps that would work better than the OEM?

Thanks
Frankie

I just bought a new OTP-2000 pump and it was shipped direct from Coralvue out of Slidell LA. and it came with the pinwheel impeller .I only paid 49.99 for the pump. Is that normal or am I just lucky this time .

Very lucky. I had to buy a OTP-1000 costed 60 bucks.

i just picked up an octo 200 from a local reefer. it didn't work so great til i found this thread. i did the impeller mod with the 3m pad and bored out the venturi for a 3/8 airline. i also ran the airline into a newly made larger hole in the collection cup. this serves 2 purposes. 1. to quiet the airline which sounded like a jet engine. and 2. to pull humid air through the line so i don't have to woryy about salt creep

now after these mods, this skimmer kicks ****

Are the mods from the earlier pages in this thread still useful on new skimmers? Hasn't been any action for over a year...
