Octospawn

I purchased a pair of single Octospawn heads (each head is about 3/4" in diameter) (1 Reddish pink and the other is a pale Green color) about 5 days ago. since bringing them home they have not fully opened.

I have them in close proximity to my Frogspawn and Hammer corals the Frogspawn and Hammer are doing very well.

I have since added a Torch coral and it opened fully in less than 24 hours (it is on the opposite side of the tank).

I dipped the corals in Coral RX prior to adding them to the tank and they show no other signs of bugs/brown jelly or any other problems.

Does the Octospawn need different Flow/Lighting than other Euphyllia coral or do they just take longer to settle in; the Octospawn seem to be the only thing unhappy.

I don't think it behaves any differently to frogspawn. It may have had more stress during transportation or it may have only recently arrived at the LFS before you got it. I think you could ask them how long they had it and if there were any issues with it.

they have had it for several weeks, and I bought it when the tank was in the middle of being serviced so it wasn't fully opened when I bought it either ( I assumed it was unhappy with them moving it around for cleaning) but the fact that I have 2 of them and they are both acting the same makes me think its a flow or lighting issue, just not sure what could be bothering both corals. I have the 2 Octospawn coral side by side (pretty much touching, the idea was to try and mix the 2 colors together when they opened up) could this be part of the problem; I didn't think it would be an issue.

My Octospawn is a bit different than my frogspawn. It likes less flow and less light. As a matter of fact, I have it on the sand right now. I plan on bringing it up a bit higher soon, but for now it has been doing great so far.

I will try moving it to a place with less flow and see what happens.

I saw that article before posting here, I did not see anywhere that it specifically addressed "Octospawn".

They should be fine together. You can mix frogspawn/octospawn with hammers but the above three don't get along with torches.

It's hard to say if the light or flow are the issues but normally if your lights are bright or you're using MH it's recommended that you place new corals under less light and gradually acclimatize them to more over time.

They're supposed to like moderate flow. I think if you can find an area of less flow than they're in now they may be tempted to open up. Only experimentation will tell. Let us know what happens.

I've always thought "Octospawn" was just a generic name for the Euphyllia divisa coral in the link provided..

No there is a difference between frogspawn and octospawn. Octospawn has bumps all over the tentacles like an octopus tentacle. I have both frogspawn and octospawn in my gfs biocube. Some days they are fully inflated and other days they look lazy. I also have them fairly close to the light but im still using the stock pc lighting

Can you post a picture of one? I think you might want to take a closer look at that link I posted above. ;)

I can help with that and I agree, they are different and at least in my case, they like slightly different levels on my tank. I have both and I can tell them apart very easily.

Here's a picture of them side by side. The left one is an Octospawn while the right one is a Frogspawn:

I will try to post a picture tonight, right now it is next to the Frogspawn so the difference between the two will be obvious (as long as the Octospawn is open enough to see it).
