I have a single clownfish, it was a part of a pair until the smaller one hopped out to go for a stroll and never came back. Since it was the bigger of the two, i assume she is female. She has done well on her own for a good long while, over a year, and continues to eat, no signs of disease that I can see visibly. I added a hang on back protein skimmer recently and since then, she has taken to hiding under the pipe of the intake, and almost never leaves that area for more than a few seconds, to the extent that sometimes i toss pellets to her and she just watches them go by if they are more than an inch from her face. To the point that I almost have to hit her with the pellets, which can scare her(which probably isn't helping). I have the spectrum marine pellets which her and the other clownfish always loved.
One thing to add is that this is a 20 gallon standard aquarium.
I have entertained the idea of getting her a replacement mate but I hear they are more aggressive in pairs, and 20 gallons is already small. I'm not sure if the replacement mate would improve her disposition or not.
There are no other fish at all, and the only other inhabitant besides the clean up crew is a banded coral shrimp. Some other fish might give her some interaction, but i fear the shrimp would possibly attack smaller fish, especially bottom dwellers.
There are days when she's more adventurous, but by adventurous i mean she might travel to the other side of the aquarium, and then back to her corner. Some days she does aggressively eat her food and comes further out of the corner to get it, but it still all seems odd to me. If it was just to do with something new being added, you'd think she would stay away from the skimmer, rather than hide around it.
