Odd smelling RO/DI?

I have noticed that my R/DI water smells a bit odd. Rather fishy, or something organic. My filter is less than 6 months old. Anyone else notice this? I suppose I need to borrow a TDS meter?

You sure it's the water??? JK!! You might check the carbon or resin filter on the unit, it might need to be changed (if your model has a carbon filter). The lifespan should last longer than six months but it depends on the quality of water in your locality. It also could be the lake turning over or some other city supply change.

yea, a TDS check wouldn't hurt either.

its your Di cartridge no longer absorbing chloramines which are passing through. Carbon will help with chloramines, but once the carbon is exhausted they can be absorbed by the DI.

Once you smell that, its time to replace the carbon and the resin, or buy a new DI cartridge

What do you use for a storage container? Do you keep a powerhead running in it?

If you don't have one, you might want to get a handheld TDS meter. You can get one for $25 from Air, Water & Ice (one of our club sponsors). Checking to see what it is producing would be a good first check on any RODI Unit concerns....

Thanks for the info all. I suppose I will simply replce the filter. Should I go for the Resin and carbon or the DI? It's a waer general unit BTW.

if so...I have some bags of DI resin.

If it is smelling fishy, it most likely is the chloramines. If so, you'll need to replace both the carbon and DI carts.

As for TDS meters, both Paul and I have added these to our RO/DI systems: Inline RO/DI

They work great and easier to use than a handheld.

Ohh.. I like the inline. Nice idea there. Thanks. As far as refilling the resin. I don't think I can. It seems to be a sealed litle cartrige.

You can borrow mine if you need to know quickly. I wish I had known about that inline model before I got the hand held one I use. It works fine, I just have to disconnect and take samples at different points to check the RO and DI.

My DI cartridge is just that, a cartridge. When I bought it, I thought it used loose material, but it doesn't. I use about 20 gallons a week and am seeing 6 to 8 months before the TDS start coming up and my water is Edmond/NW Okc (178th and Penn). I pay $35.00 including shipping for a replacement insert cartridge.

I mention all this in case someone has a significantly cheaper alternative...

AirWaterIce.com has a dual TDS meter that can plug into both the RO & DI lines so that you can tell what things are reading without having to switch things around.

You can but refillable cartridges, they run about $11.

I buy huge sacks of resin and split them out. Generally it runs around $40 for approx 5 refills. If anyone wants some resin, I have 3 or 4 bags available.

I get through approx 200g/month
