Odyssea - Considering Purchase

I've heard bad and good things. I have no personal experiance with them but I do plan to buy one once I move and re-setup my 65. That price is SO tempting tho isn't it?

Don't let the peanut gallery around here sway your decision, we can't all afford brand new, name brand lights for out setups. I think if you haven't had any First Hand experiance, you shouldn't waste your 2cents

I bought a power compact off ebay when I first started in the hobby years ago. I upgraded to a coralife fixture and difference was night and day! those cheapo fixtures get HOT. So hot that its a fire hazzard. Trust me Ive been there and if I could go back Id start with at least something halfway decent. You will upgrade anyway in the near future. The "peanut gallery" actually knows what they are talking about. If you cant afford a new nice fixture then check your local reef forums for a used one for sale. A used quality fixture is 100x better than an odysea

I saw that fixture and wondered the same thing. I think it's really new, so I doubt many folks have used them. It is interesting. I hope someone who has one chimes in.

Are you going to put it on a 12g tank? If so, it may be too much light for that little tank, especially if you set it on the tank rim rather than suspend it above the tank.

Anyhow, for $100, you won't find anything comparable, not even close. If you go for it, please share your experience. Good luck!

I owned one and sold it, at some point your piece of mind is worth more than the differance in price, I sold it after hearing about the ballasts starting fires.

I have the 250w over my 30g and i love it. It was affordable and after i got it my corals growth took off like crazy. Definetly worth buying again.

as far as I am concerned this is a reef urban legend. never seen anyone show proof that a ballast caught fire.

That being said a friend of mine bought a 250 watt fixture and replaced the ballast with a good one and he loves it..

Not any of my own to compare it to, but i can with my friends who have other MH systems. Some of the frags i have recieved from them are actually growing faster in my tank than theres. They also have a 3x250w t5 outer orbit and one has a 400w 20k diy fixture. I do plan on upgrading my ballast soon, becuase there are issues with the 250w ballast not really pulling 250 watts, but till i get around to it, this works more than adequet on my tank.

Why are you trying to change his mind? If his corals are growing and the tank is healthy and you are ok with the color, whats the big deal? I'm not a sponsor of aquatraders or anything, I'm just playing devils advocate:furious:

I've got a "devils advocate" position for you:

For the price of the Aquatrader fixture, new ballasts, and quality bulbs, you can get a halfway decent T5 fixture when you add it all up.

The T5 bulbs last longer, you get more color options, quality reflectors (aquatrader reflectors are all crap), and you won't have as many problems with heat.

I have a 36 in Odyssea with 250 w mh and 2 96w pc on my 50 gal. I replaced the ballast with an Icecap and noticed a huge difference. Now would I purchase one of these lights again? I don't think I would. My friend bought a Catalina knock-off 6 bulb t-5setup off of ebay for his 90 gal bowfront and his corals are doing just as good as mine are.

Or you could buy the aquatrader fixture, replace the bulbs and have the intensity metal halides provide. Plus most "decent" or moderately priced t5 fixtures do not utilize individual parabolic reflectors for their units. Without these most t5's will do power compact quality light.

Also, Salty is considering buying a pendant style setup, which means he does not have a lot of room his fixture. Try and find a "decent" t5 fixture that is 17" long.
