my daughter has a freshwater tank with live plants. not really the same thing, but I use Hawaiian moon sand as the substrate they all the plants seem to grow fine. As long as her mollies don't destroy them.
I have a 10g guppy tank which I have a very think gravel (colored small rocks) for me substrate has never been a problem since moss just grows and gets dense. Any type of substrate with good lighting would make them grow. It's more about the look that anything in FW tanks. God is so easy to maintain a FW. Lol
I have 3 planted tanks all with Eco-complete and flourite full of live plants cherry shrimp, tetras, kribs, and others. I have been considering selling them so we can work something out if you would like.
I was actually wanting to keep the tanks just sell the substrate, plants, shrimp and fish if you want them. I am sure can find homes for anything you dont want.
