Off topic...banjo lessons?

Does anyone on here know how to play the banjo and/or give lessons or know of someone who does? I know there have been a few mentions of guitars here and there....

Are you thinking of taking up the banjo? Just curious.

I don't teach or play very well, but I sure do love to tinker with it a few times a year. The best thing I've ever done with my banjo is have it signed by Earl Scruggs.

Indeed I am taking up the banjo...Nashville Used Music on Nolensville is having a 1/2 off sale on guitars and such starting today, and I got a steal on a banjo last night - the guy hooked me up a day early. I played a few instruments growing up, but nothing with strings. I figured some stuff out last night by just looking at a book, but I don't think that will take me very far...

2 instruments I've always wanted to learn is the Banjo and Fiddle. I'm ok on guitar and drums. Wonder if they are havin' half off on any cymbals? I'll have to check this evening.

Ryan- I'm no expert now... that's for sure... but I thought the absolute hardest part about learning to play the guitar (especially once you're past that age when it supposedly comes easier) is just teaching your fingers to go where you're trying to tell them to go. My ring finger still tries to go where my middle finger goes sometimes. This is even more problematic when you have fat stubby fingers like I do.

Guitar is the eaziest instrument to play but the most difficult to master. With that said, it took me 5 years of playing 1 night a week to get descent with it. The first year and a half you will battle with the finger thing. at least I did.

Funny, but that's what I say about the sax. Anyone can pick one up and learn to play the notes (straight up and down the horn), but it takes time to get your armature right and hold it (not to mention playing in tune on every note-not strings to adjust for that).

Congrats Moriah. I love banjo. Great sounding instrument. I would have you covered for some guitar instruction, but have never played banjo. Jenn is an excellent violinist as well if your ever interested there. She just returned from Europe not too long ago from a tour with the symphony she plays for. I just picked up this new washburn a week ago. Sounds really good. Got a pic of yours? I'd like to see it.

HaHa, we're gonna have to find that "Rockers show us what you got" thread that was started by musicman (I think was his name) awhile back....

I'll get a picture of our "instrument corner" in the office...you'd think we were some serious musicians by the looks of it. HA!

danieljames - NICE guitar. The inlay on the neck is beautiful!

Daniel- Did I hear guitar instruction? I've been looking for someone who could teach me a bit (I taught myself everything I know... and that, for the most part, is scary). I can pay in frags and beer :)

I like most anything except gangsta rap and most really heavy metal. I have listened to a ton of "classic" rock growing up (Allman Bros., Petty, Skynryd, AC/DC, etc.). I love Dave Matthews and the Counting Crows from my own kind of growing up days. More recently I've been listening to stuff that's a little more on the fringe maybe (Bright Eyes, David Gray, The Shins, Wilco... and the list goes on).

Agreed Gary...the alto sax was the first instrument I learned how to play...

I did alto, tenor, and soprano in high school and alto, tenor, and bari in college. It's hell going from one mouthpiece to another, then to another in the same day. Quick way to a sore mouth;). I played with fibrecane reeds in marching band and could regularly be heard over the trumpets:D. (Fibrecane can also rip your mouth up-bottom lip, anyway-since they are so much harder than a regular reed.) It's been years since I've broken the ole girl out (Selmer professional US model from the early 90's).
