Off topic - How to find building codes locally

I want to remodel a basement bedroom and bathroom. I want to turn the hallway next to the bedroom going into the bathroom into the closet and relocate the other doorway in the hallway that leads into a small room where my furnace and hot water is located. A friend of mine thought that there is a code that states the door must be at least 3 feet away from the furnace. My remodel option would make the doorway about 1 foot or closer from the furnace. Anyone know about that code or an easy place for me to find out without calling twenty different departments at the city. Figured I might get some valid responses on here.

I don't know residential code as well as commercial but as long as you can easily access the furnace for repair or replacement, the distance to the door probably isn't an issue. I'll try to remember to look it up when I get in the office tomorrow.

Your furnace should have a minimum clearance listed on the panel somewhere. There must also be some kind of fresh air intake for the furnace

Check the manufacturer installation manual under clearances. Technically you can have the door 6-8" from the furnace but generally you need 3' on one of the sides for maintenance depending on the layout of the furnace. Also be sure to have the door swing out of the space which will also buy you space.

It will slightly vary by manufacturer as well
