e-mail convo fromCraigslist dude.. funny response at the end. For the record I Listed a 5' hamilton tech light for 300.00 (was willing to negotiate down to 150.00) and a 1.5 hp sparco pool pump with strainer basket for 125.00 (Would have gone down to 50.00)

Interested party
Very very interested in your 48" light and pump

ME
the 5'( 60") light?
and sparco pump?
I would do 350.00 if you get both.

Interested party
That's way to much I can get the fixture on eBay for 160 and the pump for 80. Your asking more than the new price. I'm looking at $150 for both

ME
Hamilton tech 5' lights are not on ebay and retail for 900.00 + (they do have a 4' for 599.00 on ebay)and if you can find a sparco pump that size for less than 150 used .. good luck. Im am not an idiot my friend. nice try.... Items are offered at below fair price . take it or leave it . my last price is now firm. Thank you

Interested party
Leave it. Seeing as you have had that post up for a long long time. And yes I found the pump for 80 and found better lights for $200 NEW WITH extra bulbs

ME
good luck. I wasnt trying to stiff anyone and my prices were fair for what I have. nor is it generic quality equipment like you are refering to

Once its used a name brand doesn't mean Jack.

Mr $%#@@,
I hope you do not work in a sales job, your negotiation skills are horrible if not rude. In any sales environment your tactics are outdated and unproven at best. You, Mr G...a contacted me, and I opened with a reduced price on my first reply. I would have come down more if your communication skills were more mature and on point. If you do work in sales now or in the future I feel sorry for anyone you try to sell to. If you do not, I would reflect on how you try to negotiate a price down.. No one is that desperate to sell any item of any value unless they are flat broke. If you use that kind of tactic in a "large sale" environment IE: car, boat, furniture, house purchase, You will be taken to the cleaners by a competent salesperson. I would reflect how you ask people for a "favor" such as a reduced price on an item new or used. Badmouthing something to get a better price when you were the one interested in the first place is fundamentally flawed. Good day Sir.

Look a$$&ole the way I talk has proven successful. I have a $13000 saltwater setup between tank lights sump skimmer live rock corals etc.... I have only paid $300 for all so far. My negotiations skills are prime. Plain and simple. For $180 I just bought a 10 bulb t5 with moon lights and timer and a 1.5 HP pump. So you lost out not me. Had you not asked an outrageous amount for used items I would not have responded the way I did. Do you realize a brand new mag 24 sells for less than that of what you bare asking for a used pump.

You sir are a go&&amn idiot.

People like you are another reason I don't have my real name on the account

Did I handle this wrong? I dont think so.. Comments are welcome as I was amused and I hope it makes you giggle also today.

I very much dislike ppl like that. I would use the email and register it to a site for adults to spam his or her inbox. But then again I am rather spiteful. Lol

ha... that's why I rarely go on craigslist. I think you handled yourself just fine. Personally I don't bother replying to half the people. When I sold my Jeep on there I ignored a couple low ballers and then a month later a girl came out with her dad and gave a deposit on the spot. Also had good luck selling the bf's bike on it. Otherwise, I avoid like the plague. lol

Could I get their email? I don't need one, but I would be glad to start buying up MagDrive 24's for $75 new and selling them for $125. Everyone would be happy.

I love CL, but I'm not a seller. I've had a couple bad experiences, but the vast majority of my experiences have been positive. Most of the people I have met on CL have been great.

Then there's the stuff you can get off of CL that you can't buy new if you wanted to. I'm picking up a 65 gal reef ready setup tomorrow with the old, no-longer-manufactured All Glass Aquarium Classic Oak stand and canopy. It will match the 150 on the other side of the living room.

Agh, good ole CL........I think you handled it GREAT!!
My 1st few experiences I tried being polite and courteous then it became so annoying with all the lowballers/tire kickers what not. Now my posts are very blunt/to the point and no nonsense!!
My favorites are the: "Sir/Madamm, I am very interested in your item for sale however I am out of the country on business. I will wire you what you are asking plus an additional $50 to please hold until my associate contacts you to make further arrangements. Please send me your banks routing number and account so I can send you the money"
Bahahahaahah NOT!!!!!!

I use CL for all kinds of stuff, but avoid it like the plague for anything reef related. I listed corals on there once (literally, only once). The ad immediately got me one call from a guy that gave me the creeps and another that made arrangements to come over and then totally wasted my time texting me every 10 minutes telling me that he'd be right over. This lasted for almost 3 hours until I finally asked him to stop contacting me. Surprisingly.. the second guy turned out to be a URS member.

Thanks guys ... I felt like I was lecturing a 15 year old. BUT... if I could get 13k worth of reef equipment for 300.. I would be broadway street rich!! (not the nice end of broadway either.. lol)

you prob were lecturing a 12 year old I had a guy tell me to f@@@ off because I wouldnt take the day off from work to sell him a $20 xbox part

CL has some sketchy characters. I've met some very nice people but on the other end some "if-y" people at best. Had one bad experience at my home that my 90lb pit ill helped to resolve. While there are good deals you can't expect something for nothing.

Handled that in a very professional way, you have more patience than I, sir.

My latest CL deal turned crappy when the guy sold a complete reef system right out from under me. Oh well.

This situation happened to me right on our forums. Was supposed to trade a 4 bulb 36" T5 fixture and some frags for a 180g tank. I took down the frag tank the light was on, got the fixture all cleaned up, got the frags all ready, then got a text the night before I was supposed to pick it up, "I gave the tank to a buddy of mine, thanks for the interest." Waste of time and money.

I avoid the hassle of negotiating price by saying "firm" and "price is not negotiable" in the ad. If someone still tries to negotiate price, I respond by saying something like "My price is non-negotiable. If you are still interested, let me know." If they still try and lower the price, I block them.

Coming up with a firm price really avoids the hassle.

Amen!! But you still get those who will try. just don't respond to them
