offline sump

Hey everyone,
I posted this under reef discussion but did not get much of a response.

I need to add a sump to my 29 gal mantis tank but I cannot because the stand is open and my son don't mix or I should say would mix too well. I would be afraid that he would drop something in the sump like the lights. So I was wondering if I could put a sump in the laundry room and simply exchange water from the display to the sump every few days.
Does this make any sense? More importantly would this do any good?

Thanks.

I recommand staying away from the laundry room. I had my sump from my 300 in there and my 300 never did well. I cant say for a fact that the detergent leaked from the air to the sump, but that's what I'm going with as one of the reasons for being unsucessful.

It's not going to do any good unless you have water flowing between the 2. I assume you are intending to use it more like a fuge?

Don: I hope that is not the case since my top off trash can is in there.

Chris: Yes I should have said fuge rather than sump. There won't be a connection between the two. I don't see my wife liking a 2" hole in the wall. I would be the one moving water back and forth between the two tanks. I would exchange 5 - 10 gallons of water every few days. The idea is the "new sump" water would have low nitrates levels and would dillute the "tank" water driving these levels down. Eventually the two would be in equilibrium with one another and both would have lower levels.

Does this sound doable or am I just creating a lot of work?
Again I cannot add a sump to an open stand, I cannot build a new stand right now and I don't want to buy a HOB skimmer. If I had to I guess I could check out an Octopus one but I am wanting to spend that money on more lights for my larger tank.

Thanks.

I agree. And I'm sure you can admit that basically doing water changes every couple days would get old in a matter of weeks.

And my make up water is still in the laundry room. One day soon I'm gonna make a sealed container with a float switch and pump.
