I didn't calculate anything. I just decided to try it. I built my system while recovering from a stroke, so not a whole lot of calculating went into it. I read a lot before making that decision though, and a few people on RC felt it was doable. Plus I had seen tanks lit with 1K lamps at a couple LFS.

can you see light shifting/moving when viewing the display or is it imperceptible? would you do it any differently now?

yes, you can see the light shifting. It actaully looks more real. I don't know how others perceive it though. The only person I have talked with extensively about the lighting is Sherman, and he has always felt that is was a superior method of lighting a tank.

His lights are just ridiculously bright (1000 watts!) and it looks great. It also lets the light reach the corals from different angles which is a big plus IMO. I couldn't imagine needing more light.

But there IS a downside...getting body parts scorched! Damn those things are hot.

Hey Sherm...3 new beers in to the store today:

-- G. Schneider & Sohn Aventinus 500ml

-- Trumer Pils 6pk

-- Storm King Stout 6pk

Storm King!!!!! Woo Hoo!!! Hey I got my amp and cap in this morning. The subs are on the UPS truck and en route. I just finished pulling out the old amp and sub and getting started on the new. Haha, I've been going over the numbers and I think I may have over done it a bit. (YEAH RIGHT!)

so how does one calculate mh requirements for a given tank based on the mover system? would you venture to guess what the ratio is to a static system?

in other words, if one needed say 2000 watts of mh's for a standard fixed light rack, how much less wattage would be needed on a mover? half?

no way to know. I am sure Sanjay could give you some insite though. You have to look at tank dimensions too to see if you can get enough spread.

happy holidays to you and your family Jonathan and hopefully the new year will bring better luck to your reef tank.

Hey Jonathan, I really hate how it gets dark around here at 4:00 pm. When you left I thought it was like 7:00pm! Anyhow, sorry your fish didn't make it. I think you are giving them good advise to get out from under the tank.

Yah Sherman, I just got wicked tired.

Happy holidays to you guys too! :D

No gifts for the tank except for a kiddie pool and a 3" bulkhead. My wife and son did get me a cool sign for th etank room door, but I have yet to install it.
