I have my laptop on the edge of the couch and little boy in my other hand. it make it hard to type. type type type,,heheheh
J- I think you should go for it. I was thinking down the line on my new house going that direction. I was also thinking I could get plywood at 10 or 12 foot sheets. Fiberglass is a pain but most of all this stuff is a pain. Man would it take some time to build. we all love Marc Fudge aka last month totm tank. His tank rocks. Another of my favorite is the reefdoctors tank.

I am torn about this BTW. I do not have very good carpentry skills, nor are my tools very good, but the opportunity to have a starfire viewing pane is indeed extremely intriguing to me. It could even save me the trouble of pulling down my wall, since I could chop up the current tank. It's not going to have any resale value now.
Did I mention I hate working with fiberglass? Back when I was a Sea Scout, we did some fiberglass work and when we hit the rack, I got it all over the inside of my sleeping bag. That seriously sucked.
Since my current tank is only 8', I wouldn't need any specialty sheets, but I would use a very high grade marine plywood...or maybe something else....
The BIGGEST problem is that this would have to be built in place, and that would mean I would have to hold my fish and corals for an extended period. That's nearly a deal-killer all by itself, and the main reason why I am looking to get my next tank built professionally.

Bugga of a decision to make about a new tank. Pull down the wall to put in a new tank, if you go the same size, or build another tank in place :eek2:
Where would you put your current livestock if you were to build a tank, considering the dust of the ply, fumes from the fibreglass yikes!

I am sure it will all work out in the end. Or not.
I would set the livestock up in an above ground pool. That wouldn't be terribly difficult, except for the whole catching the livestock thing.
This issues with holding them for more than a day or two are touch though, like skimming, temperature control, humidty in the house, etc.

Well at least you might be able to go for a swim, salt water pools are great :lol:
That would be a headache and a half. You wouldn't sleep to good until the livestock was moved back into a tank. I'd imagine that the maintenance on a pool would be a night mare.

Well, I have been depressed about it on more than one occassion to be honest. I try to tell myself that others have done this, bugt I read so many stories about losing livestock and that would just make me sick.
Catching fish in a tank like this is a real bear too. One or two might be stupid enough to go into the trap, but the rest will never buy into it.

remove corals first, followed by lr, then fish, use two people to catch them, much easier, have seen in done in a large tank, worked quite well. nevertheless, I know what you mean, no fun

I'm hearing ya! I loose sleep when something doesn't look right in my tank.
I think Elliott is right in technique though. That was the way I moved my tank, had to catch my wrasse
which IMO was hard. Though, the technique works.
I'd volunteer to help if I were there. I would love to see a tank the size of yours. Pictures just don't do it justice, in regards to it's true size.
