I want a pair of tru black perculas, or even Oscillaris for that matter, i KNOW i have seen them, but i have searched about 30 different sites on the net and NONE have anything realted to Black Perculas... Maybe a black sadle back here and there, but they are not what i want.

Questions:
1: Do australian black perculas really exist?
2: If so where can i get one?
3: Anyone know of a site that offers non saddleback Black/white Oscillaris at least?

thanks, im going nutso over here............:eek2:

There is no such thing as a Black Percula. Those pictures are of the Darwin endemic of Amphiprion Ocellaris.

themarinecenter.com has some

Almost any good fish store should be able to find them for you. Two different LFS here have them right now but that won't help you.

As Juck said these are ocellaris from Australia.

They are almost all captive bred. Here the captive bred black ocellaris go for between $40 and $55 each. Wild Caught Black ocellaris, if you can find them, run $200 and up each last I heard. I've never seen them.

You can tell them apart from saddlebacks because they should have traditional ocellaris "bump" in the middle bar and have no yellow on the edges of the fins. Saddlebacks occasionally have the bump on the middle bar but almost always will also have the yellow on the fin edges.

BTW: Beautiful fish amuruges.

ive never seen them at my petco and the stores around me are asking 90 per clown. yeah right im going to pay 90 for a clown.

they can be rather hard to come by, you just have to keep looking. they go pretty quick when they do show up. A couple of years ago they were thick around here, but I have only seen 2 since.

I might; but not for an ocellaris.

when i first saw them, a LFS had a WHOLE 20g display full of them, im talking at least 30! that was before my tank was set up. Then i saw a pair at another LFS not 2 weeks ago, now that im ready for them... ALL GONE, and all the LFS keep telling me that what i saw was true percula with more than normal black!

I say NAY to them! They do exist and i will find them, oh yes they will be mine!

(a.k.a. i am tired/delerious and just put in my first coral tonight, including a torch that might make a good clown home)

Thanks for the help people, the search will continue

do some digging, there is a member here that has a spawning pair, perhaps you can get him to part with a couple.

The local DeathCo(Petco) has a bunch that are actually Great looking Black Occ. Anyway they are 40 a piece so shouldnt be too hard to find.

I purchased my female from the Trop back before they were so ridiculously priced. They usually have several available. http://www.tropicorium.com/

I will say she is the meanest fish I've ever had - meaner than the clarkiis, polymnus & GSMs combined.

Sorry for the poor quality pic:

What you are after is the black variant of A. ocellaris, which are bred in the US by ORA and can be ordered by any LFS. They are not rare nor are they hard to obtain if you just ask your LFS to order them.

BTW, the common name "black perc(ula)" is like the most mis used, mis applied common name out there. I have seen it applied to a half dozen clownfish species and a couple of other species of fish too.

If you want a specific species of clownfish, you really need to start talking in indisputable terms, aka species names and not common names.

well that was my trouble, i was looking for black variant oscellaris, but kept getting told by LFS that they were percula or clarkii... which i knew they were not. So back to original thought. I will keep looking for the Oscellaris then. Thanks all
