ok...my next step

good luck with it honestly and agree with you about the learning experience. hopefully it will make a positive impact.

OK my mentors...

1. I am buying some lights from Lowes today for the tanks. These are FOWLR. Lowes has NO florescent, and they have T-6's. I don't know what all this T stuff is (sorry...working on this physical science stuff I hate). I know T-5's are supposed to be great so...are T-6's at least better that NO? I'm sorry I'm such a dummy about this.

2. I have a student whose parents own a fairly major plumbing company. His dad gave him permission to go to the warehouse and get whatever I need to plumb the tanks, but I guess bulkheads are not something they have. Is there something else that is similar that I can get from them? Something that a typical plumbing supply company would have?

t - is the diameter of bulb in 1/8 th inch increments. t-1 would be a very small 1/8 inch bulb. therefore a t-5 is a 5/8 inch diameter and a t-8 is a 1 inch diameter bulb and a t-12 is a 1 1/2 inch diameter bulbs. they are all different wattages and fire differently. I would make sure the t-6 ballast will run t-12 bulbs. the t-6's will be fine for fish tanks but you will not be able to use aquarium bulbs. I think honestly you are wasting whomevers money buying them with those bulbs but that is just me. might as well do it right the first time . we have all half as.'d it before and it cost you more in the long run to redo it later. bulkheads can be purchased from john at ichthy or a similar fish store. marine supply places also have them but are generally more expensive. I do not know of anything else that is safe to use.

Thx. That helped alot.

I want to make sure they are aquarium capable for sure. I am looking to spend about $3-400 on lights. There are 5 "lab stations"...each with 2 48 inch tanks. I was going to hang a large light above each "station" and buy 5 sets of lights (there are a couple other projects on the works that will have better lights).

I've been taking forever to buy the lights because I want to make sure I'm making the right decision on them. I know people don't like aquatraders because they are knock-offs, but I love my PC's from them. I keep waiting for some of their lights I want to get back in stock.

Maybe I'll buy 10 of these - one set for each 48 inch tank.

Pretending aquatraders has a good product and you like them, do you think they are "OK" and yes, just OK will work.

thx.

check out current usa nova t5's . they are aquarium color bulbs. and they are cheap. maybe not as cheap as aquatraders but pretty cheap. I think they have normal output and high output t5's so be sure to look for the normal output for your best price.

thx! Just curious, I know a long time ago he used to have some of his things on his webpage. Does he still have that? Not even lights necessarily, just anything?

I found his website finally (sheece, looks like I scared everyone off the forum since I was the last one to write 3 days ago!!!). It looks like he's working on it. It used to have all of his live stock on it.

OK just adding this because I like updating this thread in case you guys have any wonderful ideas or see any major flaws.

I just built this make-shift stand today. The shop guy is going to come look at it tomorrow so he can design it properly. I just threw this together so I could show him and I prayed that none of this wood would crash on my head. I'm sure I had used a drill before in my past, lol, just don't remember when.

REMEMBER THIS IS JUST TO SHOW WHAT I'M GOING TO DO. The stand will be made more "professionally" as this is just a model of what's to come.

FRONT: On the bottom is a sump/refugium. Second level has a 45-inch tank divided into 2 sections and sticks out a several inches so it's easier to get into. Top section is another 45-inch tank divided into 2.

Here is the side view. The plan is to plumb from the sump to the left top tank down from the top right to the right middle and down from the left middle to the sump.

Lights for sump and each tank will be attached to the strip of wood directly above each tank, and the powerstrip will be attached to the back leg.

Great job!!! I have a nail gun that make ya life easier and ya can get it done quicker, let me know when ya going to finilize this and I can bring my compressor and framing gun and Ill nail em all together for ya :D

I would recommend a cross brace on the back to keep the stand from racking and at lest a 1/2" sheet of plywood to support the bottom of the tanks.

....agreed! I'm hoping that's the stuff my shop guy will help me with tomorrow but yes, I totally agree with that. Thank you!! There are a GREAT deal of bracing things I know need to be done, but I'm just going to let my shop guy help me with that instead of doing something I know he can do 20x better!

Thanks!!!!!

OK for the lights...
You could get some advance ballasts or other T5HO ballasts online. They are not that expensive.
Maybe someone has some endcaps laying around they could donate.
Reflectors/bulbs from john or wherever is the cheapest.

Is there a woodshop or welding shop at your highschool maybe they can help build stands/canopy's.

I wish I had a teacher like this in HS. I went to Jefferson HS in Tampa and my marine biology class was cool but not as cool as your class sounds. GL

Stands are built...Need some finishing touches. My bulkheads just arrived. Play sand, live established sand and live rock mixing as we speak. 300 gallons of salt water ready, and ready to mix another 300. Someone just told me they are donating a new generator.

Hoping to plumb it all by Monday (fingers crossed). I'm very tired, lol.

What should I use to cut 1-3/4" holes in 1/4" acrylic that I already made tanks from (yes, that was a big boo-boo).

.....and yep, we filled all the tanks up and on the stands, and they seem to be pretty sturdy and level despite using VERY twisted wood. Might have to see about making new stands for next year.
