Ok planning tank upgrade.

So Right now I have My Niger in a 55 Gal long. He is 2.5" long. I am already planning an upgrade. What would be the appropriate size as I want to keep him until it is no longer possible. 150, 180?

i always prefer wider thanks than taller but 18" wide is pushing it IMO, might work tho.

i have the same situation, 3" niger in a 55g, but the biggest tank i can move him into is possibly a 120. how large does he need to get until he is too cramped? swimming fine in the 55, follows me whenever i walk by.

I do too but I was looking at glasscages. just to see a price and the measurements and the wide one is 6 feet and the tall is 8 feet.

Unless I went with a 96 x 30 x 25 Tall at about $1200. But I would try and get it with my LFS maybe its cheaper...

And well I hope and plan to have this tank before he reaches 4 or 5"

Since nigers can get up 20 inches (probably less in a tank so figure about 3/4 of that size or a bit larger), I would think one would need a tank at least 24 inches wide and 8 feet long as a permanent home if you plan on having tankmates. Height is not all that important for this type of fish.

This is difficult to say. Triggers can live better in undersized tanks than most fish in the hobby without major health problems. The real problem with undersizing the tank is aggression. Triggers are very territorial, especially after reaching sexual maturity, and when in an undersized system they usually show major aggression and often kill tankmates. As such, you could probably keep a full grown niger in a 125 alone without a problem, but you would need a lot larger tank with tankmates.

So my best bet would be the 300 gal. 96 x 30 x 25 Tall

so for triggers an 8' tank and 30" wide is the best option, i could replcae my 2 4ft tanks with an 8 footer IF i had to money lol. GL with the tank and trigger samdaman!

Thanks Palmer, You too. I'm sure you can get a payment plan set up for a tank at your LFS.. But Idk Look around!

That would ideal and allow for suitable tankmates as well.

Looks like that will be it then. Gonna start saving tomorrow!

my problem samdaman is im 15 without a job supporting the hobby, sucks fish eggs... lol

I'm 20 and unemployed! I'm in the same boat! But I got a few leads. Maybe I can get it sooner if I get the job fast!

Mature reef tank= money!

Plus 1 more year and you can work!

You do not need this large of tank for all triggers. There are some that are suitable for tanks as small as 125 with appropriate tankmates. I would not keep any trigger, other than alone, in any tank that was not at least 72 inches long and 18 inches wide. Otherwise, they will beat on or kill their tankmates once they mature, except for planctonic triggers, like a blue throat or saragassum. They do not become aggressive in undersized systems, but they tend to not thrive and exhibit a lot of stressed behavorial traits like excessive hiding and glass pacing.

so planktonic triggers are ok in 'smaller' tanks? arent nigers planktonic but then they get big... also what about the smaller trigs like humus, picassos, etc?

lol sam im goign to get a job over the summer, working on a farm (lots in alaska LOL) gets you good money, a freind got 150 for 20hours of work (4hrs a day 5 days a week). not good pay but better than what im making.

i have a 75 reef but its no where near mature, hoping i can get there soon. im afraid of fragging

No, blue throats or saragassums are not ok in smaller tanks and do not do well in small tanks. They just won't kill their tankmates when in an undersized system. Nigers are not planktonic are in a different family than the blue throats and saragassum. Humas even full grown can be kept in a smaller tank alone, but they will be extremely aggressive with tankmates when full grown unless kept in 200+ gallon system.

See work for 2 months and you have a 300 gal tank.

Fragging is fun, and Easy!

And I agree with stuart. These fish are awesome but they need big tanks for them to be happy

6ft is minimum for many fish but like others said go as big as you can. My take is if you have to wait anoteher year to get a 10ft tank I would do that, the extra room is worth it.

Due to weight glass tanks are expensive to ship so don't forget acrylic
