Okay, as I think through my new system, a crazy idea is forming

Im thinking of making a surge box above the tank along with the tunzes and return. My idea is in the VERY rough drawing below

Okay, now poke holes in the idea. My thought was this, you have the box above the tank (duh) with three tubes that drain into the tank. On each of the holes is a flap that is attached to a float ball like inside a toilet. The three are on varying length chords and as the water level rises it opens the drains, but you need all three drains open to lower the water level to the point where the flaps close. The flaps would be on small springs with the coords running to the floor of the tank then up. Rinse and repeat.

Probably an old idea but seems like an easy way to increase flow

opinions?

Clark have you been to inland I think they have dump boxes on all there tanks. It might not be a bad idea to go look at theres they look pretty easy to make.

I think SaltyUnderground had a surge box made from a small rubbermaid container and a toilet valve..... Would fill up, ball float opened valva and dumped all the water into the tank....

Looked pretty cool when I saw it several months ago...

Keep in mind, surge devices tend to add a LOT of bubbles to the tank which can also result in a ton of salt creep. Believe me, I once had two surge buckets on my old 200.

Lots of microbubbles, lots of saltspray and saltcreep and decreased light to the corals dt all the bubbles.

Jim Craig used surge devices on his tanks if I remember correctly, you might send him a PM or email.

Sounds like more trouble than they are worth. I will have 2 6100's and 2 6200's and a hammerhead return pump so maybe I wont need it
