Olasana Lagoon: High Energy SPS Nano Build Thread

Allsps40 It's amazing how somebody with 20 years expierience can't keep a goldfish alive in a bowl with daily water changes. And all you've done since the first couple of your posts in this thread are take away from what galleon has been trying to do with his tank. Your way is fine for you just like my way is fine for me and so is the way people have kept goldfish and gourami's even ( bet you forgot about them didn't you) in bowls and other small non-filtered containers for a long time. How about instead of saying what people are doing wrong you learn from what they do right. That's how this and other hobbies move forward is by shared knowledge not negativity and disdain.

By he way galleon thanks for being brave enough to flaunt the " rules " and try something even when everyone says you can't do it. Without people with the balls to try new and wierd things we wouldn't have half the innovations or medical breakthroughs we have today. If the Wright brothers would have listened to their naysayers we wouldn't even be able to have half the stuff we have in our tanks today. Pioneers lead the way!

demonstrably NOT axiomatic

it is easy to cultivate enough bacteria on the huge surface area of a typical gravel bed (and inner bowl surface) in a bowl of 2 gal to support 2x 4" (plus tails heh) comets, if basic, simple, properly done feeding and wc's are done.

you keep pulling out these declarative statements that don't help bolster your claims of quality knowledge background, given their obvious level of error.

i worked in one of the most cutting edge fish farm/hatchery cultures on the planet and learned just how much biomass can be supported and kept in relatively low volumes of water w/just a handful of old school abc's. i'd respectfully suggest not trying to go toe to toe w/me on this one.

Great post Vitz!

I'm so glad I subscibed to this thread. So much intertainment.:D

Love your updates galleon. No matter how good or bad. Learning is what we're all here for isn't it?

I'm gonna guess the efflo turns purple.

I love my goldfish too FWIW. And I'm not Asian.. lol.

Sorry to agitate so many people on this but that is what I was always taught and I have a decent back ground in fish keeping. 3 years with Petco, 1 year at About the Reef (LFS in Az), 1 year at Pets Inc (LFS in Az) and 1 year at Suffolk County Fish and Reef (LFS in NY). I also did a 6 month program with Sea World Wildlife Research in San Diego and volunteer at the Arizona Wildlife Zoo and Aquarium. Please do not assume I am not educated in fish and coral keeping. Everyone thank you are adding you info on this subject, to each their own if it works for you and it aint broke.......

allsps, I was a professional coral and invertebrate (mostly jellies) aquarist at a public aquarium and marine science laboratory before trading that life for grad school.

Other than your year at Pets Inc. none of the ones in Az were good references to stores with good fishkeeping practices. 3 years at petco does not an expert make and since ABTR closed down twice not a great reference. The NY one hopefully was better.

The fact that allsps does not even understand the basics of a calcium reactor (as highlighted in another thread) makes me wonder about his so-called expertise in reef keeping.

saying one is a fish or coral expert because they worked at an lfs is like claiming to be an expert mechanic because one worked at avis or hertz ;)

Yeah Petco sucks but they made me an offer I could not refuse. I worked at a store that had a very large aquatics section, it was a test store for mostly salt water and reef inverts, unlike any other Petco. I helped in designing and installing the system which is why they hired me. As for About the Reef, they where the best LFS in Az at the time and they only closed once, they moved once and that is what killed them. Pretty much all the guys that worked there with a few exceptions (me included) reopened Reef Culture and thats LFS is great. At the LFS in NY we did high end service and installation. I think the cheapest tank I set up and designed was about $10k. Ever heard of Atlantis Aquarium in Riverhead Long Island? We worked hand in had with them which was every cool. I got to dive in the 20,000 gallon reef system make frags, place and remove corals. I wanted to be a marine biologist but my issues with math kept me from getting into a good college program.

Well then how does one become an expert (which I never said I was)? Experience and time in the field, that is also how one becomes an expert mechanic, from years of repairing cars.

ABTR the best in AZ. NO not EVER were they considered the best. Aquatouch and AA had them beat hands down. RC is nice but their display tank is the nicest part of it. And just because a setup costs a lot of money doesn't make it nice. Unfortunately a lot of these so called service companies way over charge for their services. Now diving in the Atlantis aquarium would be cool. Pics or it didn't happen though.

AA is great but their staff is lacking in reef knowledge and you need need to track someone down to get help, Conny is the best employee there. I dont have pics from Atlantis Riverside sorry I wish I did but it is kind of hard to take pics when you are under water and dont have an underwater camera or to take pics of yourself diving but believe me it happened and more than once. It took months of me bugging the right at Atlantis to finally get them to let me help them trim and place corals, I had to start with scrubbing smaller displays and helping prepare fish food, yuck.

lol if one cant keep SPS alive and colourful after 20 years in this hobby then does that experience mean anything ? specially if there is an active thread about it ? hmmm lol
