old classic skimmer question

Alright i understand that these need to have a constant water level to work efficiently but what dose that mean? No daily variance? what degree of variance would cause problems? Also would your water level dropping dramatically once a week for say a water change effect it?

The pump will run dry with a change of more than 1.5" so it would have to be shut off for a water change. The water level should not vary more than 1" and ideally less than that.

yea I shut it off when I do a water change but will shutting it off once a week effect its efficiency?

Very slightly in the sense it won't skim while off and has to rebuild a foam head but I think it isn't a critical issue.
