Old turtle tank as my sump?

A few months back I bought 2-20g longs that were previously used as turtle tanks and I remember someone saying that the turtles poop can slowly absorb into the sealant and can mess up a reef tank later? Is that true? If so can anyone point me in the right direction of how to clean these tanks so nothing bad happens once I set up my reef tank. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are they just regular 20g long tanks that were used to hold Turts or are they specially made 20g for turts.
I will be making a sump using a 20g long from all-glass.
If you soak the tanks in bleach water, any biological stuff left in it, if any will be gone...
I have had many reptiles and I have never heard of anything seeping into the sealant, unless the seal was not good, or the tank was keep SUPER dirty.

hey matt. they were originally reptile tanks, not turtles. so i think you should be fine no matter what.

Hey Bawla were they your tanks? If so, what did you keep in them?
Ding2daDong if you don't need both, I could take one off your hands. I would use it for my new sump.

Sounds good to me. I bought two thinking of doing a 20g tank and 20g sump but went a different direction. I bought each one for $15 so thats my price to you.

bawla47: are these aga aquariums? The glass does seem thin.

I didn't know they made a reptile 20g long and a normal aquarium.

Thanks for the help.

I think new tanks are cheap and for a 20L from AGA or even profecto should run around 30 bucks or so.

THINK about it... new tank... new seals... no worries. Is it worth it to buy a used tank that is small? Another $15 bucks is lunch money.

They do make reptile tanks that have thinner glass and are not designed to hold the pressure of water. They also may use a different sealer. I am not saying these are reptile tanks but make sure.

i dont know exactly the details on the tank, i assumed it was a standard 20g long. didnt know till now that they also make thinner reptile tanks.

both tanks were given to me. if you want to make sure matt, you can always check out bigals or somewhere else that has a 20g long to double check the glass thickness.
