Oldude's Little Reef on the Prairie

Hi Greg, I'm from Wpg and have read and followed along your threads. I must say you have a beautiful tank. Sorry to read about the challenges you faced. I am in the middle of a home reno that will allow me the room for a 365 g tank in the basement with a dedicated fish room. I hope to one day be able to emulate the success and colors you have been able to achieve with your tank. I hope you don't mind but I have printed off some photos and placed them where my tank will be for inspiration.

Everything about this aquarium is amazing. It's awesome that you've got plenty of caves and rock structure, and also a lot of room for your corals to grow at the same time. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Thanks for the kind words. Thanks for stopping by & having a look.

Thank you very much. Using pictures of my tank as inspiration is one of the best compliments you could give me. Thanks, feel free to contact me any time if you have questions. Good luck with your project.

Hi sorry if this isnt the place to ask but you use primarily MH lighting. Did you contemplate switching to all led when you rebuilt or not?

This is the perfect place to ask questions about my system.
I thought about switching but not for very long. To be honest I still prefer the overall look the MH & T5's give to the reef. I have MH in the front half & T5 in the back half, together they create a look I like and with the MH in the front there is still a natural looking shimmer in the water.

That is one of the biggest differences I have noticed between the 2 lighting methods. I am one the fence between the 2 methods but when I am ready to choose who knows how much leds would have progressed. I really like how your tank looks. I was thinking of MH and Led combo. The Leds you do have what role do they play in your lighting schedule?

For LED lighting in the main tank I have 3 small Reefbrite fixtures - 2 are 'minimags' & 1 is a 12" along the same line - all blue 3 watt bulbs that I use as moonlights but I leave them on from 8 AM - midnight.
I also have a Radion in one of the front corners that replaced a MH pendant. I have the Radion tied into the same timer as the T5 main bulbs so they are on from 1 PM - 9 PM.
The 130 gal tank in the fishroom is lit entirely by 3 watt LED's and seems to be doing OK.

Awesome tank! Have you ever tried the Twin Arc bulbs?

From what I've seen they only come as mogal style bulbs and all my fixtures are double ended HQI. So no I have never tried them but they look to be a cool inovation for the aquarium industry.
