Oldude's new 400 gal tank build

Sweet! so who did you decide to go with to make the tank? nice dimensions :). I think you will be very happy with the Vortech's.

Wow Greg! What an endeavour!! I am jealous of your new larger tank plans however not envious of you having to move that jigsaw puzzle that you've got going on in your tank now ;)

I'll definitely be watching this one! :D

If I need extra lighting I am thinking about 2 of these to go across the 8' span behind the MH fixtures and I'll use my 39w T5 fixture on my softie tank (which will be my present 72" 130 gal)
Any thoughts?
Boy I didn't explain myself very well on that post, no wonder I never had much feedback.
I am planning on using my existing fixture 72 inch HQI unit with 3x250 w & 2x 150 w. In addition to that for the extra 2' I'll add a 250w hqi pendent and then behind the MH lighting go with 2 x 48" Tek light T5 fixtures to run the 8 foot span. Now I need to decide on the T5 fixture size, 4 bulb (20,000 lumens), 6 bulb (30,000) lumens or 8 bulb (40,000) lumens.
I would really appreciate some input on this.
Thanks Greg

Wow more crazy Canucks coming out of the woodwork.
:eek1: Welcome aboard Christy & Tony.

I will definetly be watching this one as well. Sounds like it's going to be a great tank. Good luck on the transfer.

Chris

I'll keep my eyes on this one Greg! With the increased tank width I'm sure you'll be able to create some impressive oblique valleys that add to the effect of greater depth a la Steve Weast's reef.

Do us proud!

I'm also circling for the inevitable frags after the transfer :D

Installing the Tek lights behind your existing MH fixture would mean setting the MH fixture further forward and off center no? This would move your high end lighting forward and your T5 lighting to the back creating a possible imbalance. Are you planning a light timer to create a sunrise from the back culminating in full intensity toward the front? Sorry trying to picture your set up in my head. I would think the 6 bulb fixture would be perfect for back end lighting if this is the final configuration you go with. Sounds exciting! :D

It will likely be going to my daughter's place. Maybe she can teach her husband & kids to play.

I sure hope so Joe, I am quite excited about the finished reef myself just not looking forward to the transfer process. It's going to be interesting pulling my 130 gal apart. As you can imagine from this FTS from a few months ago there are a lot of pieces fused together as well as many fusing much of the rockwork together. Should create a lot of new frags. Wish me luck!

Well Greg, if you have any problems with those fused SPS i would be more than willing to help you out with a good home for them. :D

I would be using timers for sunrise/sunset which will include the 150's hqi's as I do now and for most of the day all lights will be on so I think it would be fairly intense. I'm hoping a best of both worlds scenario so I think it will be between the 6 and 8 bulb tek unit.
Thanks for your feedback.

Greg,

Are you aware that TekLights are very mediocre fixtures because they lack active cooling? They make only 1/2 the Par of an equivalent length/# bulbs ATI PowerModul for instance. I know ATIs and other European T5 fixtures are pricey, but Aquactinics makes some fairly reasonable units that are actively cooled.

James

ya those teklights are not nearly as nice as the ATIs and aquatinics.

SLS is having real trouble improving the design and last week at MACNA they had a prototype TEK with cooling that was on display for only one day the next day when you went back to the booth they said that they were going back to the drawing board completely. and nobody was around the booth to answer questions much after that.

James & Nick,
Thanks for the "heads up".
I fortunately still have time to rethink the T5 manufacturer I will use. James do you perhaps have a link for them?
Thanks,
Greg

If this is going to be an inwall tank, have you thought about a retrofit? You'll have more flexibility to fit the reflectors between the halides that way.

There is no way to add them to my MH fixture if that is what you mean. There is no room for that.
