Oldude's new 400 gal tank build

Talking with the tank builder tonight he says 2 weeks will be enough. He is adding corner cleats around the whole tank so it should be pretty strong.

Here are some shots of the progress made tonight. He will be back to attach the external overflow, add the cleats and euro bracing. I've also decided to run the overflow through the side bracing near the back so no chance of back flow and no visibility.

Yeah!!! Official Starphire..... I am glad I waited.
It's so clear that I can look through the edge and see what is on the other side 8 feet away.. now that's what I'm talking about!!!:D

Just got in what was sold to me as a chalice although my guess is it's probably mycedium. Either way it looks to have some potential.

Greg - you've got a tank!! :D
Yeah almost. Now the real work starts..... moving everything over and finishing the construction on the walls, floor & fish room. I think I will be busy for a while. Lot's of work ahead but it's got me excited. I'll try to rest up while on the Mexican vacation I leave for later this morning. Got to get to bed..........back in a week.

I don't ever want to see how one of my tanks is being glued together. I'd never ever trust it. However, have it built 'in a factory' and I'm happy for life.

How long is the cure time for that tank?

Nice Tank Greg (and photo's of course...)

In Europe we count one day per mm of glass for curing of the silicone.

So that is one day for every 0.04"

WOW!!! Both very beautiful corals!!! Any idea on the species of the Acro?

Congrats on the tank, but I agree with Marc, just unnerving to see how little goes into making one... After seeing the photos, I was thinking "That will NEVER work"

And this one just killed me:

How the heck are those little pieces of tape holding that huge sheet of glass in place??

Have fun in Mexico and I can't wait to see this beast with some coral in it!!

Interesting. Most of the glass is 17 MM or 5/8" except for the tempered Starphire front sheet which is 12 MM. I guess 17 days will work for the curing time. Thanks.
It is interesting watching it go together. There are also 1/16 tabs attached to the end cuts so there is never "glass on glass" creating weak spots. When I get back I'll post pictures of the corner cleats which should help boost your confidence. Bye for now.

Mykel, now that Greg it out of town, let's head over there, drill some holes in the glass and bolt it together. :D

I was wondering why the tank looked so sturdy but wouldn't hold water when I came home.

*****UPDATES*****
The tank is coming along nicely now. The corner cleats, front & back bracing & overflow are in. Gary, the tank builder will be back this weekend to clean the edges and any smudges, etc & add the side braces (these will be drilled for the returns) & center braces ( 2x 3" strips of 3/4") on either side of the overflow to give me some overkill strength. According to him the tank will be ready for water the following weekend. I will be using a blue background that will get applied this weekend as well. Pictures of that will follow.

Here's a few new shots.
