What do I do with a cracked 180g tank? How do I throw it out?! I'm thinking it has to be smashed to pieces...

If it were me I'd put it on Craigslist for free so someone else can lug it out of your house. Or you could always try to replace the broken pane.

i put my 110g out on the curb and the garbage men took it on bulk day... but then again we have a weekly bulk day. sorry to see your beautiful tank gone :(

Yeah, no bulk day. Township is picky about the trash. Anything over like 12''X12'' is too big it seems like.

Anyone got a sledgehammer and wanna have some fun? I don't think I could do that to something so endearing to me.

Beautiful tank, with some gorgeous fish! Love the Red Sea Butterfly.

Hope you were able to save them all.

call waste management and tell them you're throwing out a big fish tank and they'll set a pick up. So sorry to hear about your loss. =/ +1 on the foam question. what did you do with the live stock? how soon did you catch the leak?

Well... I came downstairs early in the morning to add some CaCl to find a small puddle slowly growing underneath my stool. Saw what I thought was film algae and ran the glass scrubber over it and discovered to my dismay it felt sharp and went from the top to the bottom. I didn't believe it at first, just wanting to go to bed, but realized I had an all nighter and into-the-next-nighter on my hands. I had no help, my parent were in NYC, grabbed the mag7, 8 buckets and a garden hose and went to work.

All fish are in a spare 75g I luckily still have, with just the big leather corals. About 50g spilled onto the hardwood floor next to the tiles. Lost the monti's. Luckily all the water didn't gush out at once, I had time to catch everyone and remove some of the rock.

I have tons of extra nice rock if anyone is interested. Its stuffed in my 75g and a 44g garbage can with air stones. I saved lots of halimeda too, too much actually. I need to get rid of some.

The tank was from glasscages, but before you decide never to buy from them there was a reason I believe this occurred. And its all my dad's fault, unfortunately but as usual. When I moved it the first time it was sitting in my garage. I came home to the top left glass brace shattered.:( The crack only went through the top layer of glass and not the bottom wider and thicker cross brace. I could imagine what that meant, but tried to silicon it and forget about it. The big crack isn't anywhere near the smaller old one, but it very well could have been the reason.

I did put purple foam under it twice. We even bought the suction cups to move the tank. Got 8 people to move it, but we used an undersized dolly that I know stressed the middle. I made the stand myself and it was perfectly level each way along with a level tile floor. The first spot it was in was on top of carpet and the one end was slightly lower, I could tell from the water levels. There were small splint fractures in between the glass corners. Nothing big, under 3mm, and didn't grow larger.

Man, its like I totaled a nice car or something. I invested sooo much. You guys think a reticulated python owner would like it? I'm afraid to move it cause the crack is so big and could slice my arm off if it fell and broke. It was such a nice tank. boowhowho...

Sorry to hear your loss and I feel your pain as well. I had a AGA years back that cracked on me, and I found the crack before I had a disaster. Went to a acrylic tank since then and never looked back. I would rather have some scratches in my tank, then a flood on the floor.

I managed to save my favorite 10+ year old 19'' H. crispa. It is hardier than most of my fish and corals. Needs more light than the old 75g PC Coralife fixture can pump out though. My 9'' squamosa and 7'' maxima were also key saves.

Here's some of what I salvaged:

What do people think about moving it?? Will it stay together?? How should I get rid of this tank?

Duct tape on both sides of the glass around the crack should keep it stable for a move. I did this once, but not on that size of tank.....
I agree with the craigslist thing... someone with likely buy it for their bearded dragon or snake... and they would be able to replace the glass with window screen or the like.

I would ask that they haul it away. That's it. At least you won't have to deal with disposing of it. And for they record... I've seen acrylic tanks crack too. So when deciding on a new tank, acrylic isn't always beter. GL either way you go.

I would definately consider replacing the glass pane. I just built another 100g and a 1/2" x 48 x 24 glass goes for about $90 with polished edges. You would have a brand new, scratch and crack free viewing surface. Based on my experience it would take about 3 hours to remove the old pane, and clean up the surfaces that it would mate to. Lot cheaper than a new tank and it solves the disposal problem.
