Had to tell this story for all the other poor people that may be getting shafted.. So a buddy is having trouble with his tank, wanted to know if I could test his water and see what I could come up with?!, sure I told him.. So he brings me two samples, tank water and "RO" water, well the tank water tested out fine so I said dude I'm not really sure I'm confused too.. He said can we test this "RO" water I've been buying from a "store"-"lfs" in "homewood" and I said yeah so we stick my Tds meter in it and it was, hold it, here it comes, 115 ppm.. Holy s--t I said, my city water is only 54ppm and ZERO coming out.. So the moral of this story is apparently to buy your on RO UNIT because you will probably save more money that way, and animals lives, and people in the hobby, and so on.....

Ps, vho's aren't the only light that can grow coral either... Ah hahahahahahahahahahaha ...
 
Got a general question that i have

So buddy has been buying his ro water. Then why is the tank water fine? Wouldnt that be high as well? Chemistry was never my strong suit, but i dont know why his tank water would be fine if you say hes been buying his ro water
 
Not really sure why is water tested out ok.. Maybe because we didt test for everything that can be in water.. Just the basics and with my experience in the past once green hair algae starts growing it can be hard to get a true phosphate reading from the algae sucking it up so fast.. I'm clearly just stating facts because I know my TDS meter doesn't lie.. Or If it does my tank must be some kind of miracle from the reef gods... Before anybody gets in a mood or anything because of it, I just want to warn people of what I saw with my own 2 eyes today.. People spend a lot of money on this hobby and when you pay your hard earned money for water then I think you should get the best thing available..

Mark, im not saying youre wrong, im just wondering why ro water would be high and not the tank water? Why would testing for anything else have anything to do with tds readings? You mention phosphates. What do phosphates and green hair algae have to do with tds readings? Please kindly explain as i really dont have a clue
 
This doesn't make any sense lol if he is buying bad water from a LFS for his tank and is that bad how in the world has his tank been surviving?
 
If you referring to the water, no.. He brought his container he always gets his "RO" water in and that's the one with the high Tds.. He has bought his water from the store for quite some time now and said its been slowly but surely gettig worse.. Hasent been this way forever apparently.. I'm still confused of how the water could be so dirty myself unless it's just straight sink water or the filters may be so old and dirty that the water that is being waged over some extremely dirty filters which is possibly making it worse then what comes out of a sink so to speak.. Like I said, mine is 54 on the in coming side, I'm pretty sure we are all on Birmingham water, I know that there are differences in water from each and every pipe, I'm a commercial plumber by trade, I understand that when a line has been cut and worked on by the city or whatever it can cause trash and stuff to get in the lines, even at my house when I've had to cut my water off at the road and fix some things in the past and I cut it back on it looks like mud water when it comes out for a few but when it's all said, I'm not trying to bash anybody but just a simple warning, that's all.. I would want to be warned if I was in those shoes..

I understand completely. I'm not really sure. I actually have no clue about this hobby in general and have 13 years of beginners luck. Lol, I don't know anything but what I saw, that's all.. I wish I woulda video taped the whole thing and had I known the end results I would have. It's gotta to be some kinda crazy, strange phenomenon..
 
And if you read in one of my last post this apparently just started recently with his corals acting funny and some green hair algae creeping in.. I told him to just use sink water because I don't know why anyone uses RO anyway..

Haha, just saying. Your lookin for an answer I clearly can't give you Jules. All I know is we left my kitchen from testing the basics, went to the filtration room, tested the Tds an BAM, that's what it said, I pulled it out and stuck the phrobe back in and yes that sounds bad but whatever at this poin I'm happily married to a beautiful woman and it said it again, left it in for a minute and still married to a woman and still go the same reading ok.. ; )

Well, if you DIDNT know the answer, all u had to admit to was that u were clueless! I "assumed" your 13 years trumped my measly 5 and u would know the answer, i guess i was wrong! :lol:

Havent done a water change in about 6 months, my rodi filters look like dookie.....yah, could you bring me some of your miracle water AND do the water change for me? Ill be nice and spare u from testing the tds....some crazy strange phenomenon might happen!

Look, if it makes you feel better I drank the test of the bad water and it tasted fine... Ok, what more can I say..??!!
 
Does this mean I can't come to the frag swaps anymore Jules? I'm sorry ok... You coulda just texted me and we coulda sent little emojicons back and fourth like usual. It's more fun that way, I LOVE sending you the crimson and white one too..
