what do you think of an omaha marine society garage sale? we need to raise $$$ to keep up our speaker schedules. We would like to have people donate stuff and the club will sell it to raise money.
IMO the Auction is a better idea. Most people would be happier if they were getting a bit of a return on the money they have put out to purchase their equipment and more likely to spend it on something else. I think you could even go 50/50 and it would be great if the LFS put in an item or two each also. Of course it is a little more difficult to arrange than a garage sale so maybe that would be a drawback. Just my two cents. Karen
I'm with Karen on this. I'll put things for sale in an auction but if I spent hundreds of $$ on pieces of equipment and get nothing back on it, that is hard to swallow. I don't expect a great return to start with, but something is better than nothing. It will keep me in the hobby a little longer.
I'm guessing an Internet auction would be much more simple. Get an Ebay type of thing going. In fact, I'd bet the OMS could start an Ebay store for aquarium stuff pretty easily.
The garage sale idea was intended for garage sale items (like the stuff you would see in any other garage sale) not just fish/tank equipment and not just limited to OMS members. I know how much stuff costs for this hobby so I would never ask people to just donate their equipment. I think there has been a little miscommunication here so I'll elaborate; the idea was for OMS members to donate items that they would normally sell at a garage sale or donate to Goodwill. The club would then host a garage sale that would be publicized and open to anyone and everyone. Anything that didn't sell would be donated to Goodwill and the club will be able to have a little money for future events. This has worked for other organizations (churches, clubs, etc.) and IMO I think it would work for our club. A used equipment swap meet or auction would be fun as well, but thats not what we were talking about here.
thanks for clearing things up, I guess i was a little vague and have been talking about a used equipment auction for a while. But lvpd came to the rescue and set things straight.
Great idea, I 've made up to 1,200.00 on a weekend just selling old baby crap. We would have to start working on it soon, school is starting in less than 30 days and prime G sale time will be over.
Jim~ Can you call me at the store sometime this week. I'm there everyday, but Wed. and Thurs.
