? on stony coral growth.

What would cause stony corals like trumpet and Frogspawn grow "out"? The heads always seam to grow up and out. Every other coral I have seen growing seems to grow like "fuller" and "fat". Could it be my lighting? I am running a the 28G NanoCube pro with LED's. I keep the main LEDs one for 7 hours and the atinics on for about 9. Softies are fine. Mostly ric's and mushrooms. Oh the that damn pulsing xenia will take over my take if I let it.

He it is. I bought a MP 10 yesterday and have it on NTM at 30%. I do water a 5 gallon water change every month. Run a skimmer for a few days (I can't rid rid of the micro bubbles issue and it drives me NUTS) and just add drops of Calcium-Magnisium-Iodine. I run Filter floss I change weekly and phosphate pads. Also Chemi Pure. I have a IN Tank media basket and run a Fuge in the center compartment. The Chateo grows like crazy and I have to clean nearly once a week. I also run the fugue light 24/7.

High flow makes the colony grow tighter, lower flow makes it grow more sparse like yours. This is to protect the stalk to flesh union, for want of a better way of putting it.

Also, light has a similar effect on lots of corals. High light makes them grow together, reducing their surface area that's exposed to it, lower light makes them grow apart so they can expand much more, trying to absorb all the light it can.

OK. So I can going to turn the wick up on this MP10. I have also just ordered a 40 PAR38 22K bulb from Coral Compulsion.

xpc- Not sure what grow out pattern you prefer but for referrence this is my frog spawn a few months ago. Keep in mind my tank is 30-32 inches wide, cant remember, so this coral is like 18" wide.

I have 2 x 250 MH. It sits on one corner so moderate to low light, and flow is also modarate to low.

Wow Eddie, it was only 3 heads when I sold it to her years ago

Yep- Jimbo is f=referring to the person that gave it to my like 6 months ago. He sold her a few heads like 2 years ago. She tore down her tank but gave it to me. That pic is quite a few months old. It now takes up all the empy=ty space you see around it. :bounce2:

Jimbo- Ive never counted how many heads it has. Ill have to wait for a day when its contracted, but that only happens late at night.

Thats nice Aquaman. I was wondering. When I got this last year it was 3 heads. It has really grown but again out. All the others I have seen look like yours. All day with the MP at 50% and it looks like it is staying close to the stalk now.

Is this picture at full extension? If it is, then this froggy is not 100% happy with your water. Does not look angry, but not settled. This is what my hammer looks like when the lights just turn on. In MY OPINION, the growth pattern and spread of that is normal. If those heads were fully expanded, the coral would look fuller. Its a very nice coral, maybe just needs more time to settle?

Eddie, yours is a hammer. I know because I have the same one, LOL! Mine also looks like one big bush when fully expanded, but it usually takes a little while after lights on.

Hope this helps.....

Here is an older picture of mine. Note the fullness of each head makes it impossible to tell where the heads actually are. I think in this picture, there was like 16 heads or so....

Your right Rovster. Mine is a hammer, but ive seen torches that open like our hammers before.

Ide hate to disagree with some on here but ide say its getting too much either flow, or light. Try what the others say, but if it doesnt work, give it less light and/or flow. The reactions should be evident in just a few days.

You are not disagreeing with anyone. We all alluded to something being off.

My money is on too much flow. Seems euphylia like a more gentle indirect flow. Never had a frogspawn, but that's how my hammer behaves.

previous comments had him turn up the flow on his mp10. mine just gently sways from indirect flow.

IMHO- all euphyllia like gentle indirect flow, although ive seen E. cataphyllia in moderate to heavy flow..

OK now what? Looks like mine does NOT like flow. This is one hour with the MP10 Off. Great spent 180 bucks on this pump and my Corals don't like! My Orange Ric is looking better also.

Put the pump directly over it on the other side. That's how I had mine. Will get good indirect flow. Also move ricordias closer, or they'll detach. The side opposite the mp will get the most turbulent flow. Good place for a birdsnest or sps.

Hmmmmm. looks like i "guessed" right. Low flow. :hammer:

Do what Rovster said place mp on other side, you will find other corals that DO like lots of flow. PLacement is very important in this hobby. :p

Well I set power to like 30 or 40% and Pulse around 3 LED's on short pulse. I could not get into config mode to set the night mode. I really want that thing to ballon up. My pair of clowns have been rubbing up against it. The are trying the Orange Rics and the Frog Spawn but seem to spend more time around the Frog. I'll snap another pic tomorrow and show everyone how he is doing.
