One Large QT or Two Smaller Ones

Hey everyone,

OK so after about a year, I'm ready to add some fish into QT.

I'm trying to decide if I want to do two QTs that are smaller or one larger one.

I have the following tanks I can setup for QT:
(2) 40 Breeders
(3) 20 Tall/Standards
(4) 20 Longs
(1) 55 Standard
(1) 40 Tall

I might just do some Hawaiian fish this time.

I've been wanting to try Hawaiian Cleaners forever, and might try two. I've been in talks with somebody who ended up with two while collecting.

So more than likely will be:
(2) Hawaiian Cleaners
Hawaiian Flame Angel
Potters Angel
(4-5) Anthias of some kind

I'd like to just setup the 55 gallon to only have to deal with one tank, but with two Cleaners and two Dwarf Angels in one smaller tank I'm a bit worried.

Thoughts?

If it's going to be a bad idea, how would you break them up and what size tanks?

Here's my QT area:

Thanks guys!

If it were me, I would do TTM with your 20 gal tanks, split up with the anthias in one, wrasses in another, angels in the third.

After TTM, I would either put them all in the 55 for observation or possible split the angels in one 40B and the rest in the other 40b.

Nice to have options either way.

Not a huge fan of TTM.

I do the following:
- Get Eating
- Paraguard for 15 days, with 3 rounds of Prazi.
- 4 weeks of Cupramine.

I would use the two 40g breeders if it were me

The time before last I ran (2) 40 Breeders and (1) 20 Long. Was a PITA.

Get some egg rate and some mesh and divide the 55

I was thinking about that actually. The 55 is dry right now, shouldn't be too hard to divide it up in two. Think there would be enough rough for an angel, cleaner wrasse and some anthias in each?

Would diving it length wise be better, or just divide it down the middle?

It can be especially if they don't eat before the first transfer

Big fan of proactively treating fish as well...

Just too much invested in fish to just observe.

With fish staying put in one tank for the entire treatment, I feel it gives them a better shot.

Establish a good eating response before medicating. Prazi will catch flukes and Paraguard is a good catch all that is easy on the fish. They can also be run together.

Cupramine is basically the final thing done since it's tougher on the fish, but they've already had almost 20 days to get established in the QT tank.

Also everyday during QT I dose stability. Each QT also starts with a bottle of BioSpira and runs with tons of MarinePure spheres in the HOB filters. Air stones also keep the water nicely oxygenated during medicating.

I would divide it down the middle. a lot easier to but the egg crate and viewing of both side. Plus if you ever need to QT a larger fish you can take the divider out and have a full 55

I run dual QT's because I have no self control when it comes to buying fish and find it necessary to have a second tank before the first is free again. I think it is also better to be able to separate fish that may have come form different sources. I have a 30 and a 20L, which have proven quite sufficient for my fish. Admittedly, no really big ones - 4" tang was the largest occupant.

I guess I'll end up doing two 20L or a 20L and 40B.

Also if something comes in extremely sick, it only puts one tank's worth of fish at risk.

Well decided to just go with the 55 gallon...

Was pretty dirty from when I last broke it down and left it outside during a storm. A ton of water, vinegar and paper towels cleaned it up.

Decided to do the following fish:
1 - Potters Wrasse
1 - Potters Angel
2 - Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasses
1 - Moorish Idol

Really setting myself up for a tough QT round...

The Potters Wrasse will need sand in a decent sized container, while the other 3 species are just as tough to QT and get eating... yay!

Also got a bunch of old QT stuff out of the attic and doing a long water/bleach and water/vinegar bath before putting into the QT.

Hopefully all works out well... getting the fish diver direct. We'll see if everyday stability dosing along with a decent sized QT tank and lots of water movement and oxygen along with lots of food choices will help with all these difficult speices

Trying to ship out 11/30 to avoid any Thanksgiving delays...

Ok changed my mind again...

Getting the following:
Potter's Angel
(2) Pyramid Butterflies
(2) Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasse
Potter's Wrasse

Also since I've wanted these Hawaiian Cleaners for so long, I'm going to do two 20 Gallon longs for QT. The fish should be small enough to do well in that sized tank.

Tank 1: Butterflies and Cleaner
Tank 2: Potters Angel and Wrasse and Cleaner

Went ahead and pulled out two of my 20 Gallons longs and cleaned them up and painted the 3 sides and bottom black to help the fish feel more comfortable. Just really want to do everything I can to get these guys through QT. Even thinking of buying live brine...

Here are my MarinePure spheres I've been keeping seeded as well.

Should be getting the tanks wet and seeded tomorrow. With fish showing up Wednesday December 2nd.

Getting all weird again...

I think I'm only going to get the cleaners from Hawaii.

Then get the following from LA:
- Midas Blenny (Ecsenius midas)
- Copperband butterfly (Chelmon rostratus)
- (2) Crescent Tail Fairy Wrasses (Cirrhilabrus Lunatus)

QTs are all up and running now.

Filled the HOB filters with seeded MarinePure Spheres and added two dirty filter pads from the display (full of pods and stuff). Also added a dose of BioSpira and started dosing Stability.

Running a piece of polyfilter on each HOB to remove anything that might be in the tanks I didn't get while cleaning.

Just need to work on changing the tops to accept the larger HOB filters and also setup the air pumps.

Before the fish come on Tuesday, I'll remove the filter pads and any extra gunk that comes off of them. Might put some of the filter pads in the HOB filters.

LOL you feelin okay man?

FWIW I run two 40 breeders. You're right, it's a PITA, but it gives me options with both size and species.

BUT, if my plan was to get all juvi fish, I'd definitely switch to the 2x 20L. That was my plan from the beginning. I just got an awesome deal on a bunch of 40bs. Kept two and sold the rest.....

Best of luck! My navarchus and melanurus pair just came out of QT about an hour ago.

It's the conversations that are taking place in his head that are causing the issues... I often have this same problem!

Good, Bad and the Ugly...

Had the following fish come in today:
Copper Banded Butterfly
Midas Blenny
(2) Crescent Fairy Tail Wrasses
Potters Angel
Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasse

The CBB, Midas and Crescent Wrasses came from Los Angeles, the Potters and Hawaiian came from Picturesque Aquatics.

The two Crescent Fairy Wrasses came in really bad shape. One was just barely breathing, the other wasn't too much better.

After acclimation, the worse of the two just floated to the bottom of the tank. The other swam off and hid. Found the worse of the two dead a few hours later. The other is hiding, or dead :(

The Copperband came in much larger than I ordered and had a broken lower piece of its mouth.

The Midas looked good.

The Hawaiian Cleaner and Potters Angel came in great, even though they had a much longer journey.

Put the CBB, Cleaner and one Crescent in together. The Potters, worse looking Wrasse and Midas went in the other 20 long.

The Cleaner keeps bothering the CBB, think it might have something on it's upper fin.

Tried to feed some juvenile live brine, frozen brine and frozen mysis. The Potters Angel, Midas and Hawaiian Cleaner showed interest. The CBB didn't eat and I never saw the one remaining Crescent.

Happy about the Hawaiian Cleaner showing interest in food. It definitely picked at some food out of the water column.

The Midas is an aggressive eater and the Potters picked at a lot of pieces of food.

Also the Potters and Hawaiian Cleaner are not afraid of me at all.

I feel the 2nd Crescent Wrasse and CBB will not make it.

So looking at a Hawaiian Cleaner, Potters Angel and Midas making it through this round. Also have the Bandit Angel coming this weekend.

QT for Bandit, waiting on HOB filter and changing to a bubbler with large bubbles on the left.
