One mouth feed the family?

On the flip side, perhaps the polyp does not feed while it is splitting. It strictly uses photosythesis for its energy untill reproduction has ended.

THIS.

I would assume during these times that the zooxanthallae which the coral utilizes would contribute the most to the energetic needs of the polyps since their mouths are still forming/healing.

I would also hypothesize that IF the original polyp were to eat while the newer one doesn't that the newer polyp from the split may still be putting the final touches on its development and may not be as well developed of the "mother".

I recently tried this on a green palythoa colony as one poylp was splitting into two. While feeding the colony i noticed a feeding responce from everysingle polyp, including the splitting polyp.

However, I can not be for sure that the splitting polyp actually ingested food, or was just showing reaction to the food like the rest of the colony. As it was previosly stated that zoa and paly polyps can somehow communicate with the entire colony. Proven by touching one side of the colony, and watching the colony close from that side over to the opposite.
