One stalk of Hammer Dying

I've had this for 3 weeks. Seemed to be doing well until a couple of days ago.

The hammer has 2 stalks one looks fine the other didn't open 2 days ago and now it is disintegrating. Should I remove the dead half? Can this be done with a scalpel?

I used coral putty to anchor the base down to rock so removing the dead part of the hammer may be difficult.

the head that is retracted...Is it browning over with slime? if so. remove it.

I have had this happen before for no reason - just make sure like maroon said, if it's sliming over you remove it. Euphyllia are pretty hardy.
