There is no better way to start off the work week than with some baby Onyx cuteness! 87 DPH. Body stripes clearly visible and the rich, dark coloration is starting to take over!

I'm really concerned with how these eggs look. The clowns are taking longer between spawns and these eggs look clear and inconsistent. It appears that despite my best efforts to maintain the nutrition of my broodstock, I'm not doing a sufficient job.

Does anyone have suggestions on foods to trigger the appetite of finicky clowns?

The eggs look like fungus got to them which could be due to the male not taking care of them or poor fertiliziling them.

Do yours keep the black? Mine seem to lose it and then it starts to come back slowly.

Do what keep the black? The juveniles?

My oldest clutch turned 3 months today and they are finally developing a jet black color. They look incredible. I guess time will tell but based on the lineage (these are true onyx from c-quest and bill addison, not some random solomon islands perc) I expect the color to stay and include a black dorsal fin!

Hey Im Breeding Ocellaris clowns and Ive noticed for finicky eaters and to help enduce spawning, flooding the take with new hatched brine shrimp twice a day and they will be the happiest clowns you ever saw. But those eggs are having problems I'd try adding a powerhead to that tank to get more flow and that should also get the male to go it the pot to avoid the extra flow and hopefully he'll take better care of those eggs. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips! I think the primary concern is nutrition. I'm going to try the frozen cyclops-eeze every day and also offer garlic-soaked foods. I was thinking that flow might be a secondary concern with them spawning so far into the pot but I have a plan for that as well.

I've decided to shake things up a bit with this pair. I dusted off an old 24 aquapod that I haven't used in a few years. I'm going to eventually transfer the pair from their empty 40 gallon breeder into the 24 gallon designed just for them. Going to still supply them with the flower pot but actually give them some frogspawns and maybe even a BTA or two to play with. Lots of current and I'm going to cut the bottom from the flower pot to help with circulation.

Onyx Spawn #2 hit the 3 month mark this week. I took a few updated pics but the camera isn't doing justice to how great these beauties are developing.

I've decided that I will be transferring the broodstock into a more natural setting. I'm rebuilding a 24 Gallon Aquapod to be their new broodstock tank. Here are some before pics... I've got a lot of work to do!

The Onyx Broodstock moved into their new home today and they couldn't look happier. I'm hoping to be collecting healthy spawns from them again in March.

The 24 Gallon Aquapod cleaned up nicely. I managed to knock the bottom out of a flower pot that had been curing in their sump and after a week of cycling with existing rock I felt confident that the tank was ready for livestock. With the improved current and lighting in the Aquapod (14k 150w metal halide)I should be able to sustain some BTAs so I picked up two green ones with light pink tips for $15 each at my LFS. The BTAs immediately wedged themselves into the aquascaping and I hope to get some nice pics of them in a few days. The clowns took notice but are significantly larger than the BTAs for the time being.

Thank you for posting your progress! I have been watching with interest. Beautiful clowns - parents, and babies! Hope the pair spawns for you soon.
