onyx clowns

I don't know of any "best" places to get them but if you ask for Solomon or PNG (Papua New Guinea) percs they will more then likely be the onyx. My female came as a juvie from Foster and Smith while my male came from a local shop. When young they do not show the true black colors. The full black comes out when they are pair bonded and with an anemone, that's from my experience.

Onyx Percula Clownfish are harder to find than other clownfish thus prized by hobbyists. The Black Onyx True Percula Clownfish usually originates from the reefs off New Guinea, but can be found in other locations but not often. Be careful when asking for PNG, because there are other fish out there called PNG Super Blacks......

The best looking onyx come from C-quest in puerto rico. They are the ones who coined the name "onyx". Bill Addison is the owner and man who developed them. My last 2 fish from C-quest are very young(around an inch) and already very black. By very black I mean completely black between all stripes, both upper fins black, tail almost all black.....and still developing. Rods onyx also blacken up well and are of C-quest descent.

C-Quest does have very good looking Onyx. Most arrive almost all black and have some of the most black Iv ever seen on Onys Perculas before!

with there being enough of aquacultured onyx percs around, I would stay away from wild caught. I ordered mine from premium aquatics and they have darkened up nicely. They havent completely gone through the entire color phase yet but are still young and develop more black every day. the aquacultured ones are very hardy and have a very little chance of introducing parasites to your aquarium.

One thing with Onxy is the amount of black can vary and change over the life of the fish. Several things influence the amount of black thought and alot of it is unknown.

GCreef.com in corpus Christi have some very nice Baby Onyx. You may want to check them out. Still very young and not ready to ship for a few more weeks

these are my last 2 c-quest onyx. in my opinion you cant find anything better or even close. these guys are about 1 1/4" long. the first pic is from like a month and a half ago i think. the last 2 pics are from today.
