oops..

Hi All,

I did some reading and thought I had it down. I bought a clam, moved a couple SPS and found the perfect place on top of several large embedded mollasks that are alive in a large rock. There was a nice hole where one of my sps plugs was in. I placed the clam so the foot went right into the hole and it latched right on....this was the oops part...how do I take it out to feed it now? The rock is WAY too big to be taken out. This is a 80 G display with lots of current...How am I gonna feed the clam??

Thanks,
Todd

Thanks Fishy,

I should have remembered the hats...I use to feed my open brains that way. I guess the phyto will stay in the hat..I'll give it a try..

Thanks again,
Todd

Just wandering what size clam and what species of clam it is? Also what size tank do you have, lighting etc. All the inhabitants of your reef will enjoy the benefits of phyto. Best of luck, any pics? Rob:smokin:

hi holeinone,
it's a crocea about 2.5 inches. sitting about 8 inches under the water surface and a total of 14 inches under a 175 W AB 10KK MH bulb. (total lighting in tank is 2 175W MH..and 4 X 55W PC 10kk and 7100K)

The tank is 80 G w/30 G sump and 10G refugium...DSB about 100# LR..lots of SPS, LPS and a few leathers. OH..and ALL those mushrooms that grow like Kudzoo in Georgia. Tanks been up a little over a year and I've always fed DTs...well there was a time when I cultured phyto myself but found it to be more of a PITA then just spending the money and buying the DTs.

I'm going to take some pics of the clam, probably this weekend. I'll post some...uummm..while I've got your attention...can I ask you..this clam is a dark blue with lighter blue "lightening bolts" going through it..I've noticed that over the last few days the mantel has started to show some "lightening bolts" of gold...is this normal?

Thanks,
Todd

ToddinAtl,

Clams will show a change of colors a little. Not generally as much as sps corals, but they can change a little. Usually this is from lighting changes from your tank to the dealers where it was at. As long as it is getting prettier it will be fine. Noone wants one of their beautiful babies to lose color or become less strinking. Feeding dt's is good stuff. The feeding hat will concentrate more of the phyto to the clam though(good idea). Try to feed after main lights go off, as this is when they usually feed and extend their syphon more. Best of luck, Rob

A bit of an update here,

I made the "cone of silence" (Get Smart for anyone old enough to remember that show).

I wanted to feed some DTs before the lights went off, then some after the lights went completly out. After feeding a bit with the lights on I noticed something. uuummm...here is my question (because I may have had 1 too many drinks) I noticed the mantel started pulsating different flourescent colors, blue, purple and green, all flourscent with a metalic look. I couldn't believe it, the colors were beautiful and looked like something from a sci-fi movie. Is this the secret hype of metalic croceas? Do the other type clams respond to feeding by putting on a light show?

I'll be feeding every night if this is the usual response to being fed and yes, I'm addicted to clams if this is typical behavior.

Thanks,
Todd
