I have a new open brain coral that seems to be doing good. He has been puffed up nice and big during the day and tonight I see it doing this. What us it? Is it dying? Should I be worried?

All mouths pooping simultaneously is not normal IMO. That's equivelant to everyone in a room puking at the same time. What caused this I would ask myself.

Pooping? That's crazy! Didn't know they did that. If it's not normal that they all pooped at the same time what could cause it to to do that?

I notice that on my Trachy Brain that it poops a little about 15 minutes after lights go out. I agree I have not seen it simultaneously come out all the mouths at one time. Sometimes it's only comes out of one mouth.

It seems Ok now but the lights are still off. I will have to see what it looks like when the lights come on. I will also test the water when I get home from work. Any ideas what could cause this?

So I just checked all my parameters. Ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite are all 0. Calcium is around 560?? If was nice and puffed up when I came home today.

Looks better. At least not gaping.

Calcium is high. What about alk and mag? IMHO, after temp and salinity in a cycled tank, alk, ca and mag are the three most important parameters to watch when keeping stony corals.

Should I be lowering the calcium somehow? I don't have a test for alkalinity and magnesium yet. I guess I should be getting those tests??

I would get those tests and if you dose anything with calcium in it then stop until it's down to about 440 or so. As for it pooping at the same time, I've seen it with my Duncan's and also once with zoas, they were just fine after.

If your water changes don't keep up with consumption, you would need to test daily for a week to determine the rate consumption. Usually mag will not need to be dosed in a tank that is not heavily stocked with stony corals. you'll also need a 2 part system to dose with, brs makes a nice little kit to get you started, and they also have a calculator to determine the amount needed. you may need to dose daily or every couple of days depending. after you find your dosing amount and monitor for a few days, if they stay the same, you can go to weekly and possibly monthly testing if you have them solid.

What should my levels be at? I looked at the calculators on BRS and they all need a desired level. How do I know what the levels should be at?
