open brain in trouble

The open brain has been in my tank for about 1 month. when I bought it I had a 150 watt MH 14000K then I switched to a 150 watt MH 20000K and my calcium is upwards of 480 is there any saving this coral

He's good on the sand. He might be getting too much light. I have a similar coral and when I switched to Solaris he whited out. I had to move him and reduce the lights to 70%

My brain in half way up on a standard 75 gal, Im using t-5 4 of them overdriven with a ice cap 660 with individual reflectors. Is mine getting too much light?
Can anyone else help?

If he is whiting out, then he is getting too much light. What type of brain is it? Each one has very specific needs. I had 2 different colored open brains in the same family (Trachyphyllia) and one of them needed much more light tank the other.

It's a Lobophyllia then. Usually the blue ones need less light than the redder ones. I've found that they do not like flow either. This will cause them to receede. Try a different location in the tank. My blue one always did well on the bottom, while my red one did well 1/2 way up. The tank at the time was 18" deep with 150w of MH light on it. I still have my red one. I have it in a shaded area near the top of my 70 gallon. My Solaris is too bright for it.

You should see a difference in how swollen it is in a few hours. It should look more swollen. The color should come back in a few days to a few weeks depending on conditions.

I have some areas in my tank which have overhangs and are more shaded than others. I have about 100 pounds of live rock in the tank.

thats the problem my tank is only 24 gallons its hard to find an area that the light doesn't hit. I moved the light to the rear of the tank and stopped dosing with 'Purple Up'. I hope it comes back. all around the edges is still green but the middle has gotten a little worse since the pictures were taken.

nsiegel5, I have never been able to directly feed him I use phyto plankton, I seen its tentacles just once about 2 days before this happened.

I never see the tentacles on mine.

Try a different product than Purple Up for calcium. A 2 part would work better for you.

I seen the tentacles on mine once since I bought it. The one time i did see them was when I first got it home, put it in the tank. I have mine kinda stuffed up under a rock. Use to just sit in the front of my tank but it would just get smaller and smaller. Put it under the rock in some shade, it swells like triple the size.

Also for calcium. Try some b-ionic. Works wonders.

Have you tested your parameters? Purple up has a tendency to throw ca, alk and mg off. But I think it sounds like your on the right track. Also it could just be that the picture is deceptive, but it looks kind of crammed in there. Does it have enough room to expand 2-3X its size - sometimes they do this and if they scrape against something. If this happens they can get infections and start to recede like that.

Do you have any pics of your under some shade? This would really help me.
