open brain in trouble

i only think cutting is necessary if the necrosis is advancing and getting worse not better.if there is a jelly like substance along with the tissue recession then i would cut infected area off and blow of the coral with a turkey baster, and locate it in a area with good random flow.then work on improving water quality,ie heavy skimming,25 percent water changes with aged and airated sea water and constant good parameters.if it looks better daily than i would leave it alone for now.sometimes your good intentions can stress it more and make things worse.
speed-you can feed it directly with pellets but frozen mysis or cocktail shrimp are more readily accepted.the coral should tell you when its ready to get fed.if you put flakes in for the fish and the coral sends feeder tentacles its looking for more.and also you can put it anywhere on the coral,if it is hungry it will grab it.

Iodine dip would help as well if its bacterial. Danny mine looked like yours I had it half way up on my tank. I lowered it to the sand bed making sure no sand would get on it and mine is slowly recovering (mine was never as bad as yours).

it has definitely stopped getting worse. I did have the jelly like substance and I did blow it away with a turkey baster, and now the skeleton is showing in the dead area and is dry (no jelly like substance) so I don't know if I should cut with the deterioration receding.

i would leave it alone for a couple a days ,than post a pic if you want and i will let you know what i think.it sounds like you reversed the problem or at least stopped it from advancing.like i said the brain corals can come back from a speck if you give them real good water quality and good random flow.

I will post a couple now, and then I'll wait and post a couple a few days from now.

heres where the coral is now 12/10/2007. Please tell what you think I should do.

In the photo above you can see the healthiest part is the little section on the far left

two options, one cut the healthiest part off and discard the rest ,or wait and see what happens.if it looks the same or better as each day goes by than leave it.i think it has a chance to recover if your water quality is good.keep up on weekly water changes and stable parameters and give it plenty of random flow.

well, I cut off the dead stuff. Because the crabs and snails were on it all the time and I didn't want it nipping at the healthy parts so I did what I still can't believe I did, I cut off all the dead stuff. there is now 2 corals that look like there both going to make it. I initially thought the small piece was the healthiest part but after cutting it the larger section really seems to be much happier. i will post pics soon of the 2 sections.

well here is where I am now

Did you actually cut the skeleton too?

I bought a Closed Green Brain from my LFS that was already injured in the store. I figured I'd try to save it and so far the condition hasn't changed much at all.

It's nearly round and approximately 3.5 inches in diameter with a two inch gap of skeleton showing on one side.

I started with him high up and he seemed to puff up fine but I didn't see any improvement of torn part, so I put him down in the sand last night.

I haven't hand fed anything yet but plan to tonight.

Just wondering, if mine deteriorates and I have to cut, do I cut away just dead tissue or also cut away uncovered skeleton?

danny i think it is recovering.it looks like it is inflating more than before and i see no new necrosis.i think you did good.

connpatd if the bare skelton is advancing daily and the coral is not inflating,i would cut the healthy portion off and make sure it is getting plenty of random flow.pics help if you can post a few.

Yes I cut the skeleton too. Actually I was going to use a cutting wheel on my dremmel but when I was holding it in my hands I thought I might be able to just snap it, and thats what I did, I just broke it with my hands.

rigleautomotive:
